AN UNEMPLOYED man who stabbed a cabby in the neck was jailed for 30 months on Wednesday.

Community Court judge Ng Peng Hong told K. Mohan that he had not ordered caning because of the latter's mental condition.

The 49-year-old, who is suffering from schizophrenia, had earlier admitted to voluntarily causing hurt to Mr Ngoh Chin Boon, 33, with a knife at the void deck of Block 26 Sin Ming Industrial Sector A on Aug 1, 2009. As a result of the attack, Mr Ngoh has lost his voice.

The court heard that he was playing chess with retiree Mr Chan Keng Mun, 64, at the void deck, while Mohan was drinking beer with his friend nearby.

Sometime between 11pm and 11.10pm, Mr Ngoh heard Mohan shouting and swearing into his mobile phone. As he wanted to concentrate on his game, the cabby told Mohan not to talk too loudly or the police might come.

During a heated argument, Mohan swung a beer bottle at Mr Ngoh who pushed him, causing Mohan to fall. Mohan stood up and briskly left the void deck. He returned a few minutes later with a knife to attack Mr Ngoh, who tried to run and ward off the knife but was slashed.

Mohan's friend came and pulled him away. Mohan's lawyer Suresh Damodara said his client needed help and long-term treatment.

He said Mohan was upset and emotionally stressed after his girlfriend had told him on the phone that she had aborted their child. Mohan could have been jailed for up to five years or fined or caned or received any two of the punishments.

Q: You are trapped in a pit hole with a revolver, an Ah Neh and five poisonous snakes. What do you do?

A: Shoot the Ah Neh six times

There are different shades of dark you know?

Woman cheated friend's money with tale of sick dad 14 Jan 2011 SOURCE: The Straits Times SHE not only stole from her sister and then-boyfriend, but also misled a friend into believing that her father was in financial difficulty and needed money. Siti Rosdiana Rosdi, 29, who pleaded guilty to cheating and theft last week, called Mr Mohamed Zain Abdul Wahab, 55, on Aug 4 last year and said her father faced financial woes. Believing what she said, Mr Zain gave her $1,100. Two days later, she again called Mr Zain, telling him this time that her father had been warded in hospital and needed money urgently. She met him at Lucky Plaza where he handed over $1,000. She asked for more and he gave her another $500. He found out that he had been duped when he managed to contact her father on Aug24. Deputy Public Prosecutor Nicholas Khoo told the court that earlier in June, Rosdiana was at home in Yishun Ring Road when she stole her sister’s laptop and USB device totalling $688 at around 4am, when everyone was asleep. She sold the laptop to a dealer through a newspaper advertisement. The court also heard that she stole $5,500 from her then-boyfriend, Mr Amir Abu Samah, then 36, while staying at his flat in Chai Chee Road on Nov25, 2007. When he woke up, he found both Rosdiana and the money missing. All attempts to contact her proved futile. Yesterday, the unemployed woman was sentenced to 14 months’ jail for the four charges, with another four taken into consideration. She has property-related convictions in 2001 and 2007. She could have been jailed up to 10 years for cheating, and up to seven years for theft.

I found this story of a gong cheebye to be quite funny though.

Locked in school: Teacher 'still distressed'
27 Oct 2010

SOURCE: The Straits Times

THE teacher who fractured her ankle trying to get out of a school building after finding herself locked in is still affected by the incident, a psychiatrist told the High Court yesterday.

Dr Ung Eng Khean said Ms Sivakami Sivanantham – who is suing the Ministry of Education (MOE) for damages – continues to suffer from psychological distress.

He said he anticipates that her condition will improve, but she remains vulnerable to a relapse if faced with another crisis.

Ms Sivakami, 39, claims the MOE was negligent in not ensuring that she had a safe working environment. She also contends through her lawyers that it caused her wrongful imprisonment.

The injury happened after she found herself locked inside Zhangde Primary School for about 30 minutes after coming in on a Saturday to prepare for the following week’s classes.

To get out, she had climbed through a ventilation opening to find herself hanging by her hands nearly 4m above the ground in the rear of the building. She then let go, falling and fracturing her ankle.

She spent a week at the Singapore General Hospital, but was in and out of the hospital and on medical leave for more than a year.

Dr Ung, who was testifying on the second day of the hearing, said he was unable to tell whether Ms Sivakami had a panic attack when she found herself locked in.

She had told the court on Monday that it was fear that drove her to climb through the ventilation gap.

Ms Sivakami had gone to the school at 9am on Feb 11, 2006. She left her handbag and mobile phone in the teachers’ room on the second floor before going into a classroom on the same floor to work.

At about 1pm, she emerged from the classroom to find herself locked out of the staff room. The roller shutters to the ground floor exits of the staircases were also locked, so she was unable to leave the building.

In her interview with Dr Ung of the Adam Road Medical Centre, she said: “I felt as if there was no way out... I shouted... no one heard me... I kept looking to find the best place to get out... I climbed up the opening... I was then holding on to the ledge... then I dropped down and fell into a drain.”

A staff member heard her cries and called for an ambulance.

Taking the stand in the afternoon, school principal Jaswant Kaur said she had urged her teachers to leave the school premises by 12.30pm on Saturdays so that the attendant could lock up and leave by 1pm.

Ms Sivakami’s lawyer Kamala Dewi cited more than a dozen times when the school attendant had signed out of work as early as 12.30pm on a Saturday, but Ms Kaur replied that it was a matter of “give and take”.

“There were times when the school attendants work beyond the official hours,” the principal added.

She also disagreed with Ms Kamala that she could have simply banned teachers from staying on in school after 12.30pm on Saturdays. “They are adults and Saturdays are not official working days,” Ms Kaur said.

New measures have been put in place after the incident. The school bell is now rung at 12.30pm to announce the closure of the school on Saturdays, she said.

The principal continues testifying today.

Ex-lecturer paid $450 by 3 students for revealing exam questions

SOURCE: The Straits Times

A FORMER lecturer at a private school was charged on Monday with getting bribes from students in return for divulging examination questions.

Isabelle Krishnan, 38, was an English language lecturer with the Management Development Institute of Singapore (MDIS) when she allegedly obtained a $450 bribe from each of the three students for divulging the questions set for the upper intermediate level English examination to be held by the institute on Oct 14 last year.

The alleged offences took place at a flat in Canberra Link between last September and October.

She was represented by a lawyer who will be making representations to the Attorney-General's Chambers.

A pre-trial conference has been set for Nov 4.

If convicted, she faces a fine of up to $100,000 and/or a jail term of up to five years on each charge.

Why Indian students are disliked abroad

It was the first day of a school in USA and a new Indian student named Chandrasekhar Subramanian entered the fourth grade.

The teacher said, "Let's begin by reviewing some American History. Who said 'Give me Liberty , or give me Death'?"

She saw a sea of blank faces, except for Chandrasekhar, who had his hand up:?' Patrick Henry, 1775' he said.

'Very good! Who said 'Government of the People, by the People, for the People, shall not perish from the Earth?''

Again, no response except from Chandrasekhar. 'Abraham Lincoln, 1863' said Chandrasekhar.

The teacher snapped at the class, 'Class, you should be ashamed. Chandrasekhar, who is new to our country, knows more about our history than you do.'

She heard a loud whisper: 'F ___ the Indians,' 'Who said that?' she demanded. Chandrasekhar put his hand up. 'General Custer, 1862.'

Now furious, another student yells, 'Oh yeah? Suck this!'

Chandrasekhar jumps out of his chair waving his hand and shouts to the teacher, 'Bill Clinton, to Monica Lewinsky,1997'

Now with almost mob hysteria someone said 'You little shit. If you say anything else, I'll kill you.'

Chandrasekhar frantically yells at the top of his voice, 'Michael Jackson to the child witnesses testifying against him, 2004.'

The teacher fainted. And as the class gathered around the teacher on the floor, someone said, 'Oh shit, we're screwed!' and Chandrasekhar said quietly, 'I think it was Lehmann Brothers, November 4th, 2008'.

India ministers watch as cop bleeds to death on road

india_ministers_watch_as_cop_bleeds_to_death-thumbnail.jpg

STOMPer Omg was shocked to see this news video from India, in which an injured policeman was pleading for help, while Ministers stood around and did nothing.

The video shows a desperate plea for help by a cop, who was hacked by an unidentified gang. He was begging for help, and eventually bled to death.

Said the STOMPer in his email:

"This is not unlike the situation we had when the girl was molested at the Siloso countdown party.

"All the bystanders just watched, and waited for somebody else to do something."

The State Minister and his entire convoy passed by, yet no one cared for the dying Policeman.

TN Health Secretary, V K Subburaj said in the news report:

"Our convoy reached the place at the instant it happened where the bomb exploded.

"The man was laying in a pool of blood.

"All the people stood by, guarded, but they did not go near the body, as the Police said the bomb may blast again."

Can anyone tell me where I can learn Hindi ?

Thanks.

A woman clad in a bikini was openly molested by at least four men but no one came to her aid. Several STOMPers highlighted this video and said that this occurred at the countdown beach party at Sentosa.

STOMPer Veronica, one of the STOMPers who pointed out this video, said she felt sorry for the woman:

“The guys didn't look like they were locals, and the girl looked a little tipsy.

“Seriously, I felt so sad and unfair for this lady who went for the Countdown party at Siloso.

“No one was there to help her but yet were taking photos and videos of the incident!”

STOMPer Vassili wonders if there should have been tighter security:

"It should be the responsibility of the organiser to ensure the safety of its female guests.

"The police should also been there to catch these people.

"These incidents happen all the time at big parties like these.

Only 30 months for intentionally killing people...it is not an accidental killing but return to revenge with a knife and somemore stab on the neck, obviously with the intension to kill, like that only 30 months, so light sentence. And losing one's voice is not light hurt, it is a BIG disability in life! Don't understand all these sentence sometimes.

Damned Ah Nehs cause trouble no matter where they are in the world.

A favourite hobby of Ah Nehs?.... setting fire to wives!

Burnt-alive woman: police to interview husband

New Zealand detectives have arrived in Fiji to speak to the husband of an Auckland woman burnt to death last week, but police here are refusing to reveal whether the man has been interviewed.

They have also revealed that the couple's 4-year-old son may not return, despite being a New Zealand citizen.

Twenty-eight-year-old Ranjeeta Sharma was found on fire near the township of Rotowaro, 10km west of Huntly last Thursday.

On Tuesday, police confirmed they had tracked down her husband Diwesh Kumar Sharma at a home in the Rakiraki District, west of the Fijian capital, Suva.

He had left New Zealand with their son on Friday - one day after Mrs Sharma was killed - and arrived at a house owned by his family on Monday night.

A neighbour told Campbell Live that Mr Sharma turned up on his doorstep on Monday night.

"He is a very nice boy, he seemed relaxed, happy," he said. Mr Sharma sat and drank kava with the man's son until police turned up about midnight. They asked why he was there and to see his passport before taking him to the Rakiraki police station.

It is understood Mr Sharma has since been moved to Suva. "I am very shocked," the neighbour said, adding that Mr Sharma's demeanour did not change when police showed up.

At a press conference yesterday, Detective Senior Sergeant Nigel Keall said that one of the tasks for officers in Fiji was to "assess" the child's situation.
When asked if he would be brought back to Auckland or stay with relatives in Fiji, Mr Keall said: "What we will be endeavouring to do is establish what is in the best interests of the child, both immediately and his ongoing care and protection."

Relatives of Mrs Sharma in Nadi told Campbell Live they were trying to get custody of the boy, but did not know where he was. They were also preparing for Mrs Sharma's funeral and said she would be cremated tomorrow.

Mr Keall confirmed detectives from Waikato had arrived in Fiji, but he refused to give any details of how many officers had been sent or their activities.

Fijian newspapers have reported that Mr Sharma was "under arrest". However, Mr Keall said no arrest had been made, nor had any charges been laid in relation to Mrs Sharma's death.

The Fijian Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Mr Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said authorities would expedite any extradition application requested by New Zealand police.
