What had appeared to be a happy engagement was ended abruptly when Ms Wang dug into her fiance's online past and uncovered pages of records of his late night hotel visits. The data, though now inaccessible, revealed listings of the undercover sex lives of Chinese men, according to the Shanghai Morning Post.

The address, http://www.kaifang.info/, was allegedly the platform where Wang found records of her fiance's promiscuity.

Wang was introduced to her now ex-fiance, surnamed Xu, over half a year ago. They got along well and decided to start a family together, having already bought the rings in November. They had even started to take wedding photos.

At some point Wang had become curious about her fiance's past, and looked him up in a database simply by filling in his name and ID card number. She discovered that before they had met Xu had been regularly spending money in hotels several times a week. Each of his visits lasted two to three hours.

Wang found it difficult to sleep at night after learning about Xu's liaisons with prostitutes. She eventually decided to break up with him, because she could not get over the fact that he had frequently these hotels, a front for brothels, said the report.

Another couple already married for three years also encountered similar issues. Yu, the wife, learned on the news that an online database contained people's recorded visits to hotels that fronted for brothels. Her husband, surnamed Wei, owns a company and often has to entertain customers past midnight until early in the morning.

Yu logged on the database and typed in Wei's personal information. The results she obtained filled up her entire screen. Each of her husband's visit to hotels were short. While being angry, she feels sorry her husband each time she sees him coming home late and tired. She feels unable to be as decisive as Wang and break off their relationship.

Shanghai residents have mixed views on the matter. While some believe it is safer to know about your partner's past before getting involved in a serious relationship, others said that the past does not represent the present or the future and is not worth digging up.

One lawyer said this type of information is legally a violation of privacy as it was leaked to the public domain. The leaking of personal information from the medical system or online shopping could also cause swindling cases.
