Chinese discriminating Chinese

Introductory Yakking

It is about time I say a piece or two concerning my race. Because much of my literature is very pro-Palestinian, a few individuals from the Han majority Chinese race doubt I am Chinese. So here is my piece....

Before I start, let me put up a disclaimer. This article is talking about a small group of Chinese, who feel that all Chinese must believe, behave and act in certain ways and certain ways only, in order to be classified as "Chinese". (In case it didn't hit you, LKY tries to fall into that category too, in an attempt to play to the gallery of the Han majority, albeit he looks very artificial.)

This small group of Han Chinese feel that if there are other Chinese who do not conform to those standards, "they are not truly Chinese". However, by far, the majority of Chinese don't think from that chauvinistic angle.

If the Malays, Indians, Eurasians and other minority races feel they have been discriminated in Chinese dominant Singapore, take comfort that even some Chinese feel that have been racially discriminated by their own race too.

For those who have been deluded into believing that the Chinese race is one homogenous race, with the same culture, same beliefs and same ideals, please read my other post on how the Han majority Chinese government in Singapore is discriminating ethnic Chinese minorities - PAP's Racist MT Policy, Part 2 - PAP is forcing Han Culture, not Chinese Culture, on us

Racism faced by Ethnic Chinese minorities from (some individuals of the) Han Majority (right here in Sg)

I am a Straits born Chinese, otherwise known as Peranakan Chinese. My mother tongue is Malay, yes Malay, not Chinese. The "second language" of most Peranakans is Hokkien, not Mandarin. The most comfortable language Peranakans feel when using for communication with others outside their race is - English.

Here are some typical racist attitudes Peranakans faced in the 1970s.

1. Wah, your Chinese so lan ah? You really Chinese or not?
2. You are not a true Chinese, you are chap cheng.

Here is the typical racism Peranakans face from 1980s onwards.

Due to the racist MT policy where all Chinese are forced to take Chinese, the culture of the Peranakans have been wiped out in just one generation. Many Peranakans now hardly know their original Mother Tongue, which is Malay, because they are forced to take Chinese.

Some individuals of the Han Chinese in Singapore take issue with Malaysia forcing Malaysian Chinese to learn Malay. They also take issue that Indonesian Chinese are forced to have Malay Indonesian names. But they don't realise that in Singapore, they are forcing the Peranakans to learn Chinese as their MT, instead of allowing them to learn Malay.

It can be argued that most Peranakan descendants today don't care about this loss of their heritage. That is true. But that underscores my point.

In just one generation, because of the forcing of Chinese MT on Peranakans, the Han majority have effectively wiped out all ethnic Chinese minority cultures in Singapore!

There lies the biggest irony. Some (chauvinist) Hans cry foul that the Chinese culture is being eroded in Malaysia and Indonesia. But the real erosion of a culture is happening right here in racist Singapore!

More discrimination - Chinese profiling other Chinese

Today, whenever I argue World Issues, in particular Mid East issues from a pro-Palestinian point, a small group of Hans start questioning my "Chineseness". But when I argue about Sino-Western relations from a pro-China standpoint, my race is never an issue.

It is as if these few individuals from the Han Chinese are telling me that as a Chinese, I am supposed to argue and support only "Chinese values" and not care about anything outside "Chinese business".

This is a case of profiling, where if you show strong interest in topics that is "not Chinese", your Chinese-ness is suspect, and hence, "not truly a Chinese".

Like in the 1970s where Peranakans are derided for being able to speak Malay better than Mandarin, or even their own dialect Hokkien, today, the same profiling is happening - ie I am a Chinese and hence, I should take interest only in Chinese affairs, and not in non-Chinese affairs like Mid East issues.

In other words, these (small group of) Hans have already profiled other Chinese what a Chinese should do and not do, as well how they should think and and not think.

Conclusion

I am not a very cultural person. In fact, I don't really care about my ancestral roots - be it from Fujian Province in Mainland China, where my ancestors' ancestors came from, or from Malacca, Malaysia, where my great grandparents came from.

But when some (chauvinistic) Han Chinese tell me that I should behave in a way they think a Chinese should behave, short of showing my mid finger, I would tell them - Who the hell are you to tell me how a Chinese should behave or believe?

=====

Oh yes, Happy Lunar New Year to all my fellow Chinese. Say that greeting right. It is NOT "Chinese" New Year, it is "Lunar" New Year.

Thought I need to put that reminder because some individuals from the Han majority think that Lunar NY is celebrated only by Chinese.

Don't these people know that the Japanese and Koreans celebrate it too? Let's show some sensitivity to them, OK?

Or is it that as a Chinese, I am not suppose to show empathy for Koreans and Japanese, because "they are not Chinese"?

I can name a few names in this forum that excel in bragging about their "Chineseness", pining for the lost days of Nanyang and selling the snake oil of anything chinese being good for SG:

1) Besotted
2) Uncle Yap
3) fivestars

I can name a few names in this forum that excel in bragging about their "Chineseness",

I strongly oppose ang mo anything that is ang mo I reject. Even if you said good for Singapore I will disagree. Can? Even the Chinese version of ang mo or ang mo version of Chinese, as long as got anything connected with ang mo that is unacceptable.

I don't really care you are a banana or aspire to turn into a fake ang mo.

Just don't go around 'bragging' to ppl "my Chinese very poor/ I got an E8 for my Chinese 'O' levels" etc in forums like this or in person, I am quite OK with everything else.
