New ministry will make sports our 'national language': Lawrence Wong

SINGAPORE - Making sports the "national language" of Singapore will be one of the goals of the new Ministry for Culture, Community and Youth, Acting Minister Lawrence Wong said today.

This involved instilling a culture of sports, getting even more people to participate in sporting activities, and developing sporting champions. He added that this also meant mindset changes to promote sports as a way of life that can inspire, unite and motivate Singaporeans.

Singapore Sports Council's chief executive officer, Mr Lim Teck Yin, said: "The new ministry by its very mission puts a lot of focus on using sports as a tool for nation building, and in that regard I think there's a new impetus and a new energy to work at all levels in all segments of the community."

Mr Wong noted that preparations are on track for the South East Asian Games in Singapore in 2015.

The games will be the first to be held in the new Sports Hub.

He said he hopes the games will bring the "Kallang Roar" back to the stadium and make it an event people will remember for a long time.

No need to look further. Gambling is already our undispute national language.

I always hear the roar of HUAT AH! everywhere I go, especially during the 7th month.
