Entry level pay for cleaners will now be set at S$1,000 monthly. This will set basic wage levels for low earners in these sectors through the model, which seeks to progressively raise wages as workers' productivity improves through skills upgrading and training.

For a start, all cleaning companies will need to have the model in place under a mandatory licensing regime that will be introduced this year.

Why don't they just call it minimum wage instead of coming out with funny term like 'progressive wage'? Too afraid to appear as giving in to opposition demand for minimum wage?

minimum wage would be a bad idea since 1k/mth would mean the cleaners can't apply for a hdb rental flat, or have to pay double rent for their hdb flat. hdb apparently don't want anyone with over 800/mth salary renting anything? how you apply for BTO with only 800/mth?
