Lasik eye surgeon charged with cheating healthcare provider

SINGAPORE: An eye surgeon was charged on Friday with cheating a healthcare provider of more than S$474,000.

Fifty-one-year-old Marc Tay Tze-Hsin allegedly cheated integrated healthcare provider, Pacific Healthcare Specialist Services (PBSS), on 11 occasions between December 2005 and December 2006.

He is said to have dishonestly concealed the fact that he had been paid between S$2,520 and S$83,000 for each surgery he performed at The Lasik Surgery Clinic on behalf of PBSS knowing the amount belonged to PBSS.

He will be back in court again on January 6 next year.

The pioneer recipient of the Sportsboy of the Year award was swimmer Marc Tay Tze-Hsin.

In 1977, Marc was one of the most promising local swimmers in the U-17 age group; he rewrote the record books with his 100 metre freestyle record at the Singapore Amateur Swimming Association (SASA) National Age Group meet - recording a shattering time of 56.08 seconds,and breaking the nine year-old record of 56.3 seconds.

The Anglo-Chinese Junior College student started swimming at the age of eight. He represented the school at swimming at the upper-primary level. Various competitions and meets at the schools level saw him realise his potential as a national swimmer The culmination of Marc's dedication through hard training resulted in his quick climb towards the international scene; at the 1977 SEA Games in Kuala Lumpur he became the first local swimmer to break the 56 second mark in the 100 metre freestyle, registering a time of 55.84 seconds, for which he achieved a silver medal . Marc went on to achieve a total of two silvers and a bronze at the 1977 SEA Games.

The Awards for Sportsboy and Sportsgirl were instituted by the Singapore Sports Council in 1977 to give due recognition to youths for their outstanding sporting achievements. It was initiated with the intent to spur, inspire and encourage youths to strive for ever higher standards of performance.

In 1977, Marc Tay exemplified those core qualities for which the Sportsboy and Sportsgirl awards were initiated.
