How come Jayakumar took so long and it was looking like it will never be resolved but when George Yeo's term, he managed to pacify the Malaysians and settled it amiably? Did GY "sold" the country away

I don't think Singapore got the perfect price for the lands. Neither would Malaysia consent to a deal where they were given little for something that is of great value to us. But at least they managed to meet somewhere in the middle and got this thing out of the way. Remember how LKY and GCT tried to settle this but did not manage to do so for many years.

this is one of the burden from LKY's era and i think they are just happy to get it resolved and out of the way. The longer it dragged on, the more ridiculous it look. Can you imagine, you are allowed to enter Malaysia way before you are allowed to get out of Singapore.

Where in the world you have this ridiculous policy. Although personally I feel we were shortchanged in this deal - 6 pcs of prime land in exchange of a narrow strip of land (large % in sub-urban land), and part of the deal as well, pour good money into that Iskandar crap to build wellness city and along with other sweetners that we may not know.

whatever it is, LKY has through LHL, settled the 2 thorns - the railway land and the water issue.

Singapore was the administrative center of British Malaya. Malaya belonged to the British. So the entire Malaysia belongs to the administrative center, that is now Singapore.

The main problem was LKY. He made M so unhappy.

Mahathir would never have agreed because it was his favourite football to kick around (the other being the water issue). There is also considerable bad blood between him and LKY. During Mahathir's time as a premier there was a massive signboard installed over the entrance of the KTM station building titled "Welcome to Malaysia". Any guesses on the meaning behind this signboard?

Badawi had that removed following his ascendancy and Najib proved to be more amenable to solutions, for whatever reasons.

On the Singapore side, resolving the railway land issue had taken on an immediate urgency in the aftermath of 911 and the Mumbai attacks. Which is why the government put aside other issues and is willing to give up quite a good deal of land to move it out of the city. From a security standpoint, the railway line snaking into the CBD is a soft target for a Mumbai style excursion into the heart of the business district which would have severely damaged the country if a successful attack ever came in through there.
