A volcano on Russia's far eastern Kamchatka Peninsula has erupted for the first time in hundreds of years, according to scientists.

The eruption came just days after a massive 8.8-magnitude earthquake rocked the region and caused tsunami warnings as far away as French Polynesia and Chile.

A spokesperson from the Kamchatka Volcanic Eruption Response Team said the eruption may be connected to the earthquake last week.

The Krasheninnikov volcano sent ash 6 kilometres into the sky, according to staff at the Kronotsky Nature Reserve, where the volcano is located.
