This is what I heard.
All thanks to Ah Long San.
In the early 90s, Ah Long San starts diverting their business to properties in the form of hotel 81.
Of course we all know that these business entities were used to 'wash' their black money. For those dunno what is black money, it is essentially money earned through drugs, prostitution, gambling etc etc and could not be exposed hence can't put into bank.
Hotel business were used as an excuse to turn these black money into legitimate money earned through legal business. How? By manipulating the book of course.
Now then after that they went into food business and bought over kopitiam and expand it to almost everywhere you can see a kopitiam coffeeshop or food court. If you wonder why food at these kopitiam sucks and nobody bother to go there. It's because the boss AH Long San(but now passed on to his son) did not buy kopitiam for business purposes. It's main purpose is to wash black money. That is why the food in kopitiam has turn from bad to worse, and if you bother to check, most of them are 24 hours, no business but still as strong as ever.
Sad right? Gangsters turned out kopitiam culture into such pathetic state.
Anyway I heard one hor. I dont know true or not.
