Child abuse clip: KL case
By Diana Othman
MALAYSIAN police have confirmed that the online video of a maid abusing a young child that surfaced on several websites here about a week ago is in fact of an incident which occured in Kuala Lumpur two years ago.
The two-minute clip, which was also posted on Stomp and straitstimes.com, showed a maid kicking, dragging and stepping hard on the bawling child.
It drew hundreds of angry responses from netizens who demanded justice to be done and also raging debate as to where and when it could have happened.
Kuala Lumpur CID chief senior Assistant Commissioner II Ku Chin Wah told The Straits Times on Tuesday that the recording was from an incident which took place on Aug 28, 2007.
A couple had secretly installed a webcam in their condominium and it caught their Indonesian maid abusing their three-year-old daughter.
When confronted the 18-year-old maid allegedly tried to jump off the couple's fourth floor balcony, prompting a cleaner to call the police.
She and the family were taken to the Sentul police station for questioning, after which the couple lodged a report against her. They submitted the webcam footage to back up their claims.
Assistant Commissioner Ku said the maid, who was reported to have worked for the couple for more than a year, was charged, convicted and jailed 24 months.
