Ex-navy man faces graft
By Carolyn Quek
A FORMER navy staff sergeant was charged on Thursday with accepting $12,600 worth of monetary bribes from a Singaporean contraband cigarette smuggler.
In return, Gavin Betram Lazaroo, 29, is believed to have allowed the smuggled cigarettes into Singapore.
He is said to have committed the offences six times between May 2006 and March 2007, when he was a coastal surveillance officer with the coastal surveillance unit of the Singapore Navy.
He left the navy last November.
On two occasions in May and July 2006, he had accepted the bribes from Mazlan Musa through a middleman Norazmi Sawodi. On the other four times, he accepted the gratifications direct from Mazlan.
Larazoo also faces two Customs charges for evading excise duty and goods and services tax on three packets of contraband smokes that were found in his possession in June 2007.
