SINGAPORE: Restaurant chain Spize on Friday (Nov 9) had its licence for its River Valley Road outlet suspended for an unspecified period of time, after 49 people who ate its food fell ill with gastroenteritis.

Of those who fell ill, 21 people have been hospitalised, said the National Environment Agency (NEA), Ministry of Health MOH) and Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority of Singapore (AVA) in a joint press release late on Friday.

"The suspension will be in place until NEA is satisfied that the public health risks have been addressed," the release said.

The authorities said they were first notified of the cases on Wednesday and conducted a joint inspection of the restaurant’s premises on the same day.

"Several hygiene lapses were observed, including leaving ready-to-eat food uncovered in a chiller, not providing soap for hand-washing (soap dispenser was faulty) and slotting knives for preparing ready-to-eat food in the gap between the food preparation tables," the authorities said in the press release.

"The operator has been instructed to rectify them immediately," they said.

NEA, MOH and AVA added that the licence of Spize's River Valley Road outlet was suspended to "protect consumers from public health risks from the continued operation of the foodshop".

The outlet has been directed to dispose of all ready-to-eat food, thawed food and perishable food items.

Spize is also required to conduct a "thorough cleaning and sanitising" of its premises, including equipment, utensils, work surfaces and toilets, and to review and rectify lapses in food preparation processes identified during the inspection.

The release also said that AVA has collected food and environmental samples from the outlet as part of the investigation. Laboratory tests are ongoing.

Meanwhile, MOH has collected stool samples from some of the affected cases and referred the restaurant's food handlers for stool screening.

"Based on our joint investigation findings, NEA will take the necessary enforcement actions against the operator for the hygiene infringements found," said the authorities.

SPIZE OFFERS "SINCERE PRAYERS"

Spize had said earlier in a Facebook post on Friday that it is working with MOH and NEA to identify the exact cause of the food poisoning.

"On the 6th of November, Spize @ River Valley supplied 88 bento sets to a location," said the restaurant. "To our knowledge, 15 of them who consumed our bento sets fell ill."

It added that it would like to "offer our most sincere prayers for those affected".

The local restaurant, which serves a variety of Asian fusion food, added that it was committed to taking "any necessary action required".

"We would also like to wish a speedy recovery to those that have been affected."

Spize has four outlets at Bedok, River Valley, Rifle Range at Temasek Club and Siglap.

usually has to do with cross contamination of knives and utensils used for fresh salad preparation. poorly trained cooks are notorious for using kitchen knives and utensils that are used for raw meat in cutting up vegetables and cooked meat for salad. moreover, with little to no supervision from well trained chefs these cooks will not wash their hands after peeing and pooping nor wash the containers and vegetables during salad preparation. in sg, refrain from having "fresh" salads in any restaurant that is less than 6.9 stars, i.e. food not personally prepared by the best of the best chef. horrible transport and storage methods, climate, heat, humidity, poor kitchen practice, lousy training, non-existent supervision, all add up to you consuming "fresh" vegetables that will cause you to lao sai.

It's a Halal restaurant. The bacteria in the food is Halal too.
But the guys who prepared the food aren't. They will have to revoke the halal status. Halal means only hala l chefs in the kitchen. Its not a form of discrimination. Its just like adverts saying "only mandarin speakers need to apply".

SINGAPORE (THE NEW PAPER) - The number of people hospitalised after eating food from Spize has more than doubled since the news broke last Friday (Nov 9).
As of noon on Tuesday, 69 people have been affected, with 46 of them having been hospitalised.
It was previously reported that 49 people were affected with 21 hospitalised.

In a statement to The New Paper on Tuesday, the Ministry of Health (MOH) said 26 of those hospitalised have been discharged. It added that one person remains in the intensive care unit (ICU) while the others are recovering.
TNP reported on Tuesday that a Sats Singapore officer, who is in the ICU, is in a critical condition with his lungs and kidneys affected.
The Spize outlet at 409 River Valley Road had supplied 88 bento sets to Brink's Singapore for Deepavali celebrations on Nov 6.

The Sats officer ate the catered food as he was deployed to Brink's Singapore at the time.
A joint statement by the National Environment Agency (NEA), MOH and Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority last Friday said the authorities were notified of the cases on Nov 7 and they conducted a joint investigation that day.

Spize Restaurant in River Valley suspended after 49 cases of gastroenteritis reported
The statement added that they were investigating several cases of gastroenteritis traced to the consumption of food prepared at the restaurant.
"Several hygiene lapses were observed, including leaving ready-to-eat food uncovered in a chiller, not providing soap for hand washing (soap dispenser was faulty) and slotting knives for preparing ready-to-eat food in the gap between the food preparation tables," said the statement.
The outlet's licence was then suspended and will remain so until NEA is satisfied that the public health risks have been addressed.
Numerous attempts by TNP to contact Mr Haresh Sabnani, 41, the co-owner of Spize, have been unsuccessful.
