Though the mystery of the foul smell at Sengkang has been solved, STOMPer cannotbreathe remains deeply unhappy with the entire incident. In the STOMPer's viewpoint, the incident would never have happened if construction work was properly monitored and regulated in the first place.

For two weeks now, residents have lodged complaints with NEA and Town Council regarding a foul odour at Sengkang. The stench was reportedly particularly pungent around Compass Point shopping mall. Even after NEA identified the source of the odour as fertiliser, Sengkang continued to reek of the rancid smell.

In a news story today (Oct 8), the Straits Times confirmed that the Sengkang stink was caused by a huge compost heap at a construction site at Punggol Way. Though the compost is necessary to fertilize the land for building, construction company Koh Brothers admits that their contractors may have overestimated the amount of compost needed.

Also, they said that the compost heap may not have been covered well in the evenings, allowing the smell to spread to residential areas.

STOMPer cannotbreathe is outraged:

"Elderly and young alike were made to suffer for weeks because of a calculation mistake and negligence!

"And our homes and schools in the entire neighbourhood continue to stink even now as lorries gradually remove the excess compost.

"The Koh Brothers may get fined, but what can remedy the suffering of the people in Sengkang?

"Prevention is better than cure, and instead of allowing the matter to come this far, NEA or some agency should be regulating the work at construction sites.

"Especially when there are so much construction taking place everywhere in Singapore!

"Don't wait until people are suffering and complaining before taking action!"

STOMPer Charles wonders if these plumes of smoke apparently emitting from Pulau Bukom refineries are a health hazard.

Said the STOMPer:

"These clouds of smoke were captured close to midnight billowing from Pulau Bukom refineries.

"It happens every day and night.

"The picture was taken using night scene mode from a high-rise residential building in Dover Crescent.

"Not sure if someone could advise if this is hazardous."

STOMPer W1770W claims that residents living near Pioneer MRT station have to endure the unpleasant-smelling exhaust from refineries on Jurong Island.

STOMP understands that refineries practise 'flaring', a safety procedure to burn off excess gases. It prevents fires and explosions in a plant due to a gas build-up.

The fumes are composed of mainly water and carbon dioxide.

In Singapore, all flaring is subject to regulatory limits. In response to a recent flaring incident at Pulau Bukom, an NEA spokesperson said that the flare has 'not impacted the air quality on the main island, and there is no cause for concern'.

Nevertheless, STOMPer W1770W expresses concern:

"Don't be shocked by what you see, residents living near Pioneer MRT station have to endure unpleasant smelling exhaust almost everyday from this chimney!

"Does this meet health standards?

"To the man on the street, foul smelling air is bad air!

"We have the right to demand for good quality air, I really worry about the health of my children."

But Abang busy, watching for floods, he has so many things to watch, give him a break lah!..:D

End of year coming, NEA very on the ball, especially towards years end, where you have Christmas, New Year & then Lunar New Year; they out in force to issue summons...hint!, bonus & assessment time...;)

I wonder if people living near Jurong Island have a higher incidence of cancer or other ailments
