A recent report by Malaysian media The Star highlighted a steep decline, about 30 to 40 per cent in some parts, in Singaporean shoppers in Johor during the year-end period.
One Johor business operator, Robin Jian, said that while November and December are usually the busiest period for businesses, that did not appear to be the case this year.
Some reasons posited include the strong ringgit and unpredictable weather conditions.

Shin Min Daily News interviewed some stall owners at KSL City.
The sharpest decline among the people interviewed was felt by a hair salon with multiple outlets in the area.
The manager similarly posited factors such as exchange rate fluctuations and a crackdown on unlicensed taxis as reasons.
He said that he has seen a 30 per cent decline in business compared to the same period last year.
He said that 90 per cent of his customers are from Singapore, so business has been quite affected.
He added that the salons are now launching promotions to attract these customers.
A massage parlour said business had gone down 10 per cent, and said 80 per cent of their customers are Singaporeans.

Some of these customers told them they will be going abroad soon, so the parlour expects business to be a bit quiet towards the end of the year, but expects good crowds on weekends still.
A clothing store at Mid Valley Southkey said the number of shoppers was comparable to previous years, but the amount spent had decreased quite a bit compared to last year.
