We bought & tried Jeanette Aw's S$60 brownies. Now we know why it's S$60.

First of all, we would like to clarify that it's S$60 for a seven-inch square brownie (not a single one).

But it is still quite a bit to blow on brownies—so we thought we'll make the most out of it by writing a review, despite it being a personal (and impulse) purchase.
But price, it seems, is not too big a problem. At one point, the brownies had a "900-1,000 pax" wait list, according to Aw.
We visited Aw's physical storefront in Jalan Besar to collect the brownies because we were too cheap to pay for delivery.

Review

When Aw called it "fudgy," we were expecting it to be a wet, sticky brownie, a texture some might not be too fond of.
What we got, however, was quite different.

While it's definitely still fudgy, the brownies are substantial enough to chomp down on, without sticking unpleasantly to the insides of our mouths.

The top layer is also crisp and crackly, in addition to the sprinkles of speculoos.
Some of us were too busy scarfing down the brownies to notice it, though.
Aw can take it as a good sign that no one paused for too long while eating them.
A colleague who used to bake, educated us on Au's good control over the baking process: the dessert was not overbaked, with the right amount of air being introduced to the batter.
"What’s diet when you have nice noms sia," the same colleague commented.
But the real test comes in when we feed it to those who have no care for chocolate.
Amazingly, the brownies passed with flying colours, winning over even those who don't usually eat the dessert.

"It definitely has something special about it," they agreed.
The chocolate that Aw uses is "good stuff"—the good type of sweet that doesn't overwhelm you and eventually become jelak.
There's also a hint of a bitter aftertaste, although we're not sure if it's from the dark chocolate or a tiny splash of coffee in the dessert.

Verdict

Spending S$60 on brownies may be unthinkable to most of us plebs, but we take comfort in the fact that Aw, who has been to Le Cordon Bleu, baked these herself.

It's not something we would eat regularly, but it isn't available that often anyway.

Bottom line? "Just close your eyes and pay." (If you have the cash to spare, of course.)

As a control, one non-chocolate loving colleague also ate another brand of relatively famous brownies the next day ("Just to check if my tastebuds are going mad," she said).

We are happy to report that her tastebuds are working perfectly fine (she didn't like those), which means there is plenty of merit to Aw's brownies after all.

The next bake sale is happening on May 21, if this article has you convinced.

This brownie is being massed produced in factory of Johor.
Made shipped and repacked in Singapore.

$60 per shot is a better deal. No one cares for your overpriced crusty pastries, you showbiz floozy.

And you can tell that to your media accomplices at SPH, Mothershit etc.

It’s no secret that Chen Xiuhuan, 56, is a huge foodie and loves to cook and entertain. The actress frequently shares her culinary adventures on social media and is a regular on our Foodie Friday round-ups. She launched her own F&B brand, punnily named Huan In A Million, on Friday (Jan 7) so that she can share her creations with more people. “My friends and family have been telling me to open a restaurant but I don’t want to do that. I want to [share my food with others] my own way,” she tells 8days.sg.

Huan In A Million is an online-based business where Xiuhuan lends her creative muscle and branding in collaboration with various F&B Folk. This time, it’s with the Royal Cuisine Group, which runs Yanxi Dim Sum & Hotpot Restaurant. Its group executive chef, Hong Kong-born Chan Wai Keung, a good friend of Xiuhuan’s, won the 2015 Milan World Expo Food & Fashion world competition, and was conferred the title World Chef God.

She currently only offers one product — the luxe-sounding truffle pen cai.

Xiuhuan with chef Chan

Xiuhuan wanted her brand’s first offering to be the auspicious one-pot dish ’cos it’s her “dream” to create a festive pen cai.

“It’s my family tradition to have pen cai during Chinese New Year. I also enjoy eating it ‘cos there are always surprises in the pot and I feel very blissful when the whole family eats it together. So, when I told chef Chan about this, he suggested we collaborate,” she says.

The fancy pen cai comes in a steel pot loaded with 18 premium ingredients like abalone, braised pork belly, scallops, fish maw, and has been given a “Western twist” in the form of freshly-shaved Italian black truffle.

“We use mother hen, pork bones, white fungus, fish maw and truffle to create the broth to give it a nice hue and aroma. We also top the pen cai with shavings of an entire truffle. You are greeted with the aroma of truffle when you open the [pot containing the] pen cai,” says Xiuhuan.

Only 100 sets available

Priced at $368, the dish, which will be prepared by chef Chan’s team, will launch on Jan 13 and only 100 sets will be available. If you are interested in snagging a pot or two, you’d better be quick. Xiuhuan shared that she has already received “more than 50” requests for pre-orders from friends.

“After I shared about my F&B business on social media on Friday, a lot of my friends called my husband and I hoping to place pre-orders. Even Rebecca Lim texted me to order, too. I am really touched by the support,” says Xiuhuan, adding that she might consider offering more sets for sale.

Fans can look forward to more culinary collaborations between the actress and her chef pals, as well as some of her favourite dishes like her mum’s Hokkien bak chang.

“I love my mum’s rice dumplings ’cos they have the ‘taste of mum’, so maybe I will sell my mum’s bak chang during Dragon Boat Festival, as well as some of my mum’s signature dishes,” she says.
