A Japanese man has gone viral for defying age norms by falling in love with his classmate’s mother, who is 21 years his senior.

The man even bought a home worth nearly 40 million yen (US$272,000) in an attempt to win over her parents.

Isamu Tomioka, now 33 and from Shizuoka Prefecture, first met Midori, who is now 54 and the mother of one of his classmates, during a parent-teacher meeting in his junior school days.

Later, when Tomioka was 30, he visited his old classmate’s beauty salon and was surprised to see Midori helping out there. He instantly recognised her and at that moment felt an immediate connection.

“I instantly fell in love with Midori,” he said, adding: “She is elegant, gentle and full of feminine charm.”

On learning she had recently divorced, he asked for her contact information.

Midori admitted she was “surprised” but also “very happy” to be pursued by a younger man.

Despite initial doubts due to their age gap, his persistence won her over.

Midori said: “He remembered everything I had ever said.”

His romantic gestures included spontaneous trips to Disneyland, arranging a private church service featuring her favourite songs, decorating their hotel room with balloons and flowers, and sending her daily messages with care and affection.

However, when the couple decided to marry, Midori’s family voiced strong opposition.

Her parents told him: “Midori is already 51 and cannot have more children. This is unfair to you and your parents. You are only 30. It is better to marry someone your own age.”

To demonstrate his commitment and sincerity, Tomioka took a bold step.

He bought and meticulously decorated a 38-million-yen home to show Midori’s parents he was serious.

Eventually, both families gave their blessing, and the couple officially registered their marriage in July 2024.

He not only became a stepfather to Midori’s daughter but also a “grandfather” to her four grandchildren.

Tomioka enjoys a harmonious relationship with all of them.

Their story, reported by the Japanese talk show Shinkon-san Irasshai, sparked widespread blessings and humorous reactions among Chinese netizens.

One person said: “So from now on, never joke around in a guys’ dorm by saying ‘I am your dad’.”

Another wrote: “This guy really went all out to pursue someone he liked, not just emotionally, but practically too. He delivered both emotional value and real material value.”

While a third added: “There is no one-size-fits-all path to marriage. As long as the two people are living a good life together, that is what matters most. I wish them happiness.” - SOUTH CHINA MORNING POST
