Jailed for pregnancy ruse
By Elena Chong
A WOMAN who cheated 10 victims of a total of $10,450 by claiming that she was pregnant and needed money for medical expenses was jailed for 16 weeks on Thursday. Ng Sock Kuin, 37, admitted to six counts of mostly deceiving victims into believing that she was pregnant and had suffered a miscarriage and obtained money for her medical expenses.
The offences occurred at various places between April and June. A district court heard that the victims gave her between $250 and $2,000 after hearing her sob story. Ng, who has convictions for drug-related offences, said in mitigation that she was the only one looking after her ailing father, who did not have much time left.
She said that she had stayed clean for four years and later suffered a relapse. District Judge Roy Neighbour backdated her sentence to June 11 and took six other similar charges into consideration. Ng could have been jailed for up to 10 years and fined on each charge.
