Jailed for not paying wages
By Elena Chong

<!-- end left side bar --> <!-- story content : start --> A MAN was jailed a total of nine months on Wednesday for failing to pay his workers' salaries. Julian Yip Si Wei, 27, was owner of Zippon Marine & Engineering and M Power Engineering when he committed the offences earlier this year. He pleaded guilty to 50 charges of failing to pay the salaries of $768 to each of 50 foreign employees who were working as labourers for either Zippon Marine or M Power. Sometime at end-December last year, Yip ran out of work for the foreign employees. However, he did not cancel their work permits and repatriate them, but instead continued to retain them in Singapore. It was a condition of the work permits that the salaries of the foreign employees should be paid to them no later than seven days after the last day of the respective salary periods of Jan 8 to 31, and Feb 1 to 24. Fifty other similar charges were taken into consideration. He could have been fined up to $5,000 and/or jailed for up to six months on each charge.
