Jail, caning for having parang

By Khushwant Singh

WHEN Iskandar Mohamed came across a police roadblock along Jalan Toa Payoh at 3am on April 9 last year, he promptly stopped his car in the middle of the road. He and three passengers got out of the Fiat Punto but he climbed in again and sped off.

The police tracked the rented car to a parking lot in Boon Keng Road and found a parang with a 30cm-long blade alongside personal items belonging to Iskandar in the boot. Arrested on July 14 last year, Iskandar, 25, also had no driving licence.

Yesterday, he was fined $800 for driving without a licence and sentenced to six months in jail and six strokes of the cane for possessing the parang, which is a scheduled weapon under the law. He was jailed an additional four months for cheating shipping officer Luo Pei Xin of $1,850 in a rental scam by pretending to be the owner of a flat in Lorong 1 Toa Payoh.
