Decades ago, most peasants were quite poor and bak kwa is considered a luxury where you only get to eat it during CNY.
As times passed by, it has became a tradition to give bak kwa during CNY.
Of course this leads to higher demand during CNY and hence the higher prices.
Not so sure about the longer queue as it is just a "particular" store.
There is no queue in most other stores.

Your question like "Why can't they give other things to people during CNY" is not correct as you can give other things.
It is your choice.
I have not given bak kwa during CNY all these years.

The question is addressed to those who are queuing to buy bak kwa at exorbitant prices during CNY. It's not addressed to people like you and me.

You suggested that bak kwa in the past was considered a luxury which you get to eat during CNY.
But that's not the case now, is it? In fact, it's now ironically a luxury during CNY because of the high prices, but not really a luxury at other times these days.
I understand the reason for the higher price, but not the (logical) reason for the higher demand.

during cny, ppl usu buy tings 2 gif 2 others 1, mah ... like abalone, mushrooms, scallops, bird nests ... so bak kwa oso la ... as bak kwa is oso seen as a delicacy ...

as 4 hi price, brame dose bak kwa sellers who c opportunity n raise price ...

all other fudstuff price oso go up during cny wat ... ur question can oso apply 2 other fudstuff ... eg sausage, raw fish, etc ...
