China’s dramatic new Japan travel warning sparks backlash as foreigners flood into Japan anyway
Foreigners in Japan were stunned today as China suddenly warned its citizens to avoid traveling to Japan.
Chinese officials claimed the “people-to-people atmosphere” had become dangerous after Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said Japan could defend Taiwan if attacked.
The warning came after Beijing summoned Japan’s ambassador and threatened “a heavy blow” if Japan interferes with China’s plans for Taiwan.
Japan responded calmly, saying its position hasn’t changed and that peace in the Taiwan Strait is essential for Japan’s security.
Officials in Tokyo dismissed China’s outrage as political theater aimed at intimidating Japan’s new leader.
Meanwhile, Japanese social media erupted with relief, as many locals have long complained about overtourism and unruly tour groups.
Foreigners visiting Japan joked that China had accidentally given Japan “the best gift possible.”
As global tensions rise, Japan says discussions will continue, but it refuses to retract Takaichi’s remarks.
