He killed his elder brother, and then he too, was shot dead. The death of the Chadha brothers in the Bollywood-style shooting could be the beginning of a more nasty battle over the family's multi-billion dollar empire.

A liquor and real estate baron, Gurdeep Singh Chadha-better known as Ponty Chadha-was one of India's most powerful businessmen. He was reportedly killed by his younger brother Hardeep, who was also killed in the shoot-out, over a family dispute at their luxury farmhouse in New Delhi.

According to The Times of India, the brothers were embroiled in a bitter dispute since the death of their father, Kulwant Singh Chadha, last year. A source close to the family said tension between the two siblings, who were forced to stay together at the insistence of their mother, had reached breaking point after Hardeep sold off a paper mill without informing Ponty.

"Ponty went [to the farmhouse] with about 30-40 men in Land Cruisers, Mercedes and a Tata 407 tempo. He wanted to take possession of the farmhouse and lock the rooms, and Hardeep arrived after being informed of this by his guards. The brothers argued for a few minutes and Hardeep fired the first shot," said a senior police officer. The shootout lasted for over 30 minutes.

But eyewitness Sukhdev Singh Namdhari, chairman of the Uttaranchal Minorities Commission who was also Ponty's friend, told police that the brothers had not even entered an argument when the bloody gun battle took place, reported The Indian Express.

He said as they arrived at the farmhouse gate, Hardeep fired at the car where Ponty was in. "Ponty tried to flee but was shot. I opened the car's door and ducked under the car but Hardeep fired at me too. Two shots were fired in my direction. My personal security officer (PSO) fired at Hardeep in retaliation," said Namdhari in his police report.

The daily said 55-year-old Ponty suffered more than 10 bullet wounds while Hardeep took four to his body, reportedly fired at by the PSO. Fifteen people have been detained to facilitate investigation.

Another police officer said Ponty was using black ink to erase Hardeep's name from the nameplate outside the farmhouse. "We have already confiscated the weapons. We are in the midst of verifying the statement of Namdhari and others." Police are also trying to ascertain why only the warring brothers were killed, when the shootout was between their groups.

Ponty, who spent his early youth selling snacks with his father at a country liquor shop, went on to preside over a business empire that stretched across India and had politicians from every political fraction eating out of his hands, but he had always kept a low profile.

The Chadha family, three brothers-Ponty (chairman), Hardeep (executive director) and Rajinder Singh (managing director)-and Ponty's son Manpreet 'Monty' Singh ran the Wave Inc empire, formerly Chadha Group.

The New York Times reported that the Chadha family's wealth has been estimated to be US$1 billion (S$1.22 billion) to US$10 billion, with holdings that include paper mills, shopping malls, movie theatres, sugar refineries and residential real estate projects.
