(RTTNews) - Flash floods triggered by torrential rains have left at least six people dead and several others missing in Italy's northwestern port city of Genoa, officials said Friday.

While five of the victims were killed after the lobby of an apartment block in which they had sought refuge flooded, the sixth was crushed by cars being swept by the flood waters.

Television footage showed the rushing flood waters uprooting trees and sweeping cars and furniture from low-lying homes through the streets. Officials said two rivers flowing through the city have broken their banks.

Local authorities have advised city residents against venturing out of their homes and to move to higher grounds or upper floors. Genoa mayor Marta Vicenzi described the devastation caused by the flash floods as "a completely unexpected tragedy."

Flooding has also been reported in Venice. Heavy rains have been lashing most of northern Italy since Friday morning. The country's weather agency has warned that the rains are expected to continue in the region until at least Sunday.
