Former lawyer given Suspension Direction, subject to restrictions
<!-- by line --> <!-- end by line --> A SELF-RADICALISED Singaporean who was detained in 2007 under the Internal Security Act (ISA) has been released, the Ministry of Home Affairs said yesterday. Abdul Basheer Abdul Kader was arrested in a Middle Eastern country, repatriated, and detained here for planning and preparing to engage in militant activities in Afghanistan. He was then 28. Said the ministry in a statement: 'Since his detention, Abdul Basheer has been cooperative in investigations and shown significant progress in his rehabilitation. 'As such, he was assessed to no longer pose a security threat that required preventive detention.' He was released on Sunday on a Suspension Direction (SD). This means his detention order has been suspended. But he must abide by certain conditions and restrictions. The SD may be revoked by the Home Affairs Minister and the individual will be detained again if he does not comply with any of the conditions stipulated in the SD.
