[Replying to the writer of: Xenophobia isn’t about politics, it is OUR CONSCIENCE!]
I take it you meant to say that TRE readers or at least the majority here are xenophobic and The Government being pro-foreigners are not?
Let’s start with the Government. This Government has several phobias – the main one being control phobia. Should any foreign organisations, as a group or individual meddle in our domestic affairs or even criticizes the Political leadership in all manner under any circumstances, they will be hounded mercilessly and treated with hostility for a long time to come. Even in judiciary matters Queens Counsels from the European countries notably from England are barred form Singapore’s Court especially those cases that have a political slant to it.
This xenophobia stems from their control phobia. Their infatuation with new citizens, PRs and foreign workers serve only as an expediency for more dollars and political power – read as more votes for elections. This Government does not love anything except themselves. So their temporal pro-foreigners policy does not mean they are no latent xenophobia buried deep inside them.
While the Government has everything to gain by welcoming foreigners, we the people are paying a very high price in terms of trade-offs. Singapore is close to operating in a system-overload mode. Our livelihood, infrastructures, public goods, social amenities are shrinking by the minute with non-stop invasion of immigrants from all over the world.
We make no apology in guarding our birthrights – just like anyone, anywhere in the world would.
