Intel vs AMD?

My Intel core duo system died & I'm now looking for a new mothboard & CPU as a replacement for the current defective micro-ATX system.

I already have an intel i7 system for serious work & I use the core duo system to surf the internet & check email since it has a lower power signature i.e uses less power. The old system had a built-in video & sound. It was adequate since I don't play games.

In the past AMD made more power thrifty CPUs while Intel chips was faster but consumed more power.
Haven't kept up with the current CPU's that's why I'm asking for opinions on whether I should go with AMD or Intel

If notebook/laptop than consider power consumption., If desktop then power consumption is not that important.

I never find any Intel performing faster than AMD, apple to apple, same grade, same price comparison.

In the top server / workstation end Opteron beats Xeon, and the Itanium is long lost and dead. In desktop and laptop range all similar scenario.

But performance means power consumption. Power saving means poorer performance.

currently for desktop the new AMD is A Series.

As you can see the higher models runs at 100W Max and lower model only at 18W Max, a huge difference.

In the past I would never have considered the power requirements to run my computers. However with the cost of power, I'm using a more power efficent Western D's green HDD, avoiding the latest video cards which are power hogs, making do with more power efficient CPU's. Considering getting a more power efficient LED monitor.

I use the computer for long periods, reading books & magazines. listening to music, watching video etc Sometimes even forget to switch off the computer. I was thinking of getting an iPad to do all this but it can't do flash, have problems connecting to my printer & there are still supply constraints. So I've decided to wait & see what Apple does on future iPad models?

I do have a i7 system connected to multiple monitors but it consumes alot of power & I would like to keep separate my business & recreation activities.
