Inspection team finds expired items at food outlets in Penang

BY CHONG KAH YUAN

GEORGE TOWN: Two well-known local food franchise outlets in Jelutong were found with expired bread and bread dough during an inspection by the State Health Department.

The department’s enforcement chief IderisMohamad, who led a team in checking six food outlets here yesterday, said the bread and dough for pizza had expired on Nov 24.

He said the expired bread was found placed among other loaves at one outlet, while the expired bread dough in the other outlet had been disposed of.

The department’s north-east district office inspectorate and legislation chief Ahmad Shukri Bakar said using expired food violated the Food Act 1983 and Food Regulation 1985.

“We have already issued letters to both the management. If they admit wrongdoing, then our enforcement can seize the expired products.

“If we do not receive a reply in a week’s time, we will take the matter to the court,’’ he said.

He said food outlets which repeatedly commit such violations would be brought to court.

Ideris said that as well-known food franchises, the managements should have been alert about the expired ingredients.

The three-hour operation saw a total of seven compound notices totalling RM630 issued.

Among others, the offences ranged from food storage, unhygienic food handling and failure to have workers inoculated against typhoid.
