Do you have relatives and friends who constantly criticise others and point out little faults? Such behaviour is often due to their own insecurities, low self-esteem or personal issues. This behaviour is usually a defence mechanism to make themselves feel better. Projection is when people attribute their own unacceptable feelings, behaviour or flaws to somebody else. A person worried about his own job performance becomes overly critical of a colleague. By focusing on the flaws of others, this person may boost his own fragile ego self-worth, even if it is only for a short time.
