They may be corrupted but at least their government is protecting the maids..
SINGAPORE - A new set of rules imposed by Indonesia on its nationals working as domestic helpers in Singapore has affected the supply of such workers.
Some maid agencies have reported a drop in business as much as 20 per cent.
But the policy change has benefited the Indonesian maids.
Previously, Ms Siti Mukodimah Mukori, a domestic worker, had to wait nine months before she can send money back home.
That is because she had to repay her placement fee of S$3,000 to her employer in instalments.
This means she typically gets only S$10 or S$20 of her monthly salary for the first eight months or so.
With the new policy, Siti pays a lower placement fee and takes a bank loan instead.
She repays the bank in eight months and gets to keep more money - about S$200 every month.
Even though her employer pays a higher agency fee now, she believes it is the right thing to do.
Siti's employer, Aisha Said Khadaied, said: "Put myself in their shoes, any human would like to have a better salary. So I think it's a very good scheme." CHANNEL NEWSASIA
