BANYUWANGI--Ten American Marines called the United States Marine Corps (USMC) had to be evacuated due to fatigue while undergoing survival training in the Selogiri forest, Banyuwangi, East Java, Tuesday. Staff of the Marine Corps Information Service (Dispen) Lettu Mar Mardiono reported that from Monday (19/10) to Tuesday (20/10), it was recorded that 10 US Marines had fallen and were unable to continue survival training due to fatigue and not being able to stand the tropical weather.

"For example, Ranus (26), who has the rank of BFC and was born in California, is one of 10 US Marine Soldiers who had to be evacuated by the medical team from the Indonesian Marine Corps," he said, accompanied by his partner Serda Mar Kuwadi.

The Survival Exercise was attended by 362 American Marines who were guided by 16 trainers, three interpreters (translators), four communications personnel, and five Soldiers of the Indonesian Navy's Marine Corps Combat Guide Team (Rupanpur). This survival activity is part of a series of joint exercises (latma) for American and Indonesian Marines entitled "Interoperability Field Training Exercise (IIP?FTX) 2009" in Situbondo and Banyuwangi, 17-24 October 2009.

The Latma commanded by Marine Colonel Nur Alamsyah was carried out in four places, namely Banongan Beach, Karangtekok Marine Defense Center, Banyu Putih District, Situbondo, Pasewaran, and the Selogiri Banyuwangi forest. In Selogiri, 362 US Marines who explored the wild forest were divided into two groups, each of which was divided into five teams accompanied by trainers and doctors from the Marine Corps of the Indonesian Navy.

One by one the teams were dispatched into the forest, but the committee had prepared obstacles and mine traps set up in such a way as a challenge, so that occasionally the sound of mines exploding was heard from behind the thick forest. The explosion sent the soldiers into a frenzy, but they still coordinated with each other in one command with their team commander.

Before going through the war in the jungle, the American Marine soldiers were equipped with some knowledge and insight regarding how to survive in the forest. "We also teach them how to eat plants in the forest, dealing with animals including snakes and several types of wild animals," said the Head of the (Katim) Survival Team, Captain Marine M Machfud.

Another trainer, Pelda Marine Mujiono, practices the correct way to tame snakes. Some American Marine soldiers also tried to eat some wild plant species. With limited logistical provisions, a soldier is required to survive. Each wave of the Survival Drill took four days and four nights.

"They face tough challenges, even though they carry combat equipment such as M.16 A4 rifles, GPMG, other sophisticated weapons equipped with infrared, quite sophisticated communication equipment, and digital tools for positioning on earth (Global Positioning System / GPS). )," he said. ant/kpo
