AN AMOROUS hotel guest yesterday got his come-uppance for molesting a student trainee.
Businessman Udaya Kumar Purushottaman Chembottu (photo), 50, who was staying at the four-star hotel in Little India, touched the 19-year-old on the shoulder, rubbed her back and then stroked and slapped her buttock.
For what he did upon leaving the hotel's lounge on the evening of Feb 6, he was sentenced to a week's jail and fined $3,000.
The Indian national is appealing against the sentence and is out on bail of $10,000.
The teenager was not his only victim that evening. Just before molesting her, he had hugged and kissed a 24-year-old hotel employee as well.
The charge against Chembottu for taking liberties with the older woman was taken into consideration in the sentencing.
Assistant Public Prosecutor N.K. Anitha said Chembottu was the last to leave the hotel's lounge at about 8.30pm that evening. After hugging and kissing the hotel employee, he approached the 19-year-old, who had seen what he did moments before and tried - unsuccessfully - to avoid him.
Upset, helpless and angry that her modesty had been outraged, she fled to the pantry area to cry.
She reported the matter to her shift leader, and the duty manager and security officer were alerted. After watching the closed-circuit television footage of the incident and ascertaining the identity of the culprit, the police were called in.
Chembottu's lawyer Darshan Singh said his client, who is married with a daughter, was a regular visitor to Singapore and had thought that he could 'show appreciation' to the women by stroking or kissing them.
He could have been jailed for up to two years or fined or caned, or been given any combination of these penalties.
