India: Monsoon Floods Wreak Havoc

NTDTV | August 24, 2009

In northern India monsoon floods have forced thousands to flee their homes. Normal life has been brought to a virtual standstill.
Hundreds of villages have been flooded in Indias northern Ayodhya. For almost two weeks, the Saryu River has continued to rise.

The water level has reached more than two inches above the danger mark. The streets are flooded and locals are getting around by boat.

The floodwater has even entered temples.

[Avdesh Sharma, Local]:
"Due to the rapid flowing river, water has started entering the temple area. The 30-60 foot staircase in front of the temple is almost under water. Because of the rising water level, the whole area is panicking. It has been almost one and half weeks. It is becoming very dangerous."

Thousands of villagers are forced to flee their homes in the wake of monsoon floods in northern India. Agriculture has also been affected.
