JOHOR BARU, Jan 18 — Police have arrested a man and a woman following a two-hour high-speed pursuit from a residential area in Adda Heights to the North-South Expressway.

The 20-year-old man who was driving a Proton Persona and his 18-year-old girlfriend were stopped and detained along Kilometre 76.6 (northbound) of the North-South Expressway at 1.37am today.

Johor Baru South police chief Assistant Commissioner Raub Selamat said the incident began when a crime prevention team came across the couple in the Proton Persona at the car park of a recreational area in Adda Heights at 11.30pm last night.

“The crime prevention team from the Taman Datuk Onn police station were earlier alerted about the car and its occupants that were acting in a suspicious manner.

“However, before the policemen could conduct checks, the suspect reversed his car and rammed into the patrol car before fleeing.

“In their pursuit, the policemen radioed the Johor Baru South district command centre for assistance where they were later joined by 10 patrol cars in the chase.

“Following the pursuit, six patrol cars from the Johor Baru South police and four from the Johor Baru North police managed to corner the suspects along the expressway from Johor Baru towards Ayer Hitam,” Raub said in a statement today.

He was commenting on video clips of the chase that were shared on social media since earlier today.

Raub said the couple were immediately arrested and police also seized the Proton Persona, a mobile phone and RM168 in cash from the duo.

Initial investigations revealed that the duo were believed to have panicked when the crime prevention team approached them earlier.

Both did not have prior criminal or drug related cases.

Raub said two have been remanded for three days under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code starting today to facilitate investigations.

“Investigators have initiated investigations under Section 186 of the Penal Code for obstructing a public servant in discharging his duties as well as Section 42 of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless driving,” he said.
