Image of marine's new recruit goes viral

Yahoo! August 2, 2013, 4:48 pm

It is a picture which has gone viral – and now the story behind why a marine was running alongside a little boy has been revealed.

Lance Corporal Myles Kerr came last in the five kilometre race in Michigan – but he won over plenty of admirers after the image was posted on the ‘Seal of Honour’ Facebook page.

The 19-year-old marine was making his way around the course when he noticed nine-year-old Boden Fuchs struggling to finish.

The boy asked the marine ‘Sir, will you run with me’.

Still in full fatigues and backpack, Kerr drove the boy to the finishing line and then helped him find his friends.

The Lance Corporal came last in his age group; his time of over 35 minutes so slow the other marines running the race thought he had injured himself.

Tweeting about the image, which has been shared hundreds of thousands of times, he said: ‘I was just doing what any man would do, but thank you’.
