Ilo Ilo has been pipped to the Oscar's best foreign film shortlist by Hong Kong auteur Wong Kar Wai's martial arts movie The Grandmaster.

Just last month, local director Anthony Chen's family drama had beaten The Grandmaster to emerge triumphant as Best Feature Film at the Golden Horse Awards.

The shortlist of nine films was released by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Dec 20. The other Asian contender is Khmer Rouge documentary The Missing Picture, from Cambodia's Rithy Panh.

The final five nominees will be announced on Jan 16.

Well, Anthony Chen and his team has done a good job already.

watched it inflight, so so to me ... nothing much to shout about

Without the pinay and Malaysian actress, this sinkie movie will never win and award.

To win an Oscar, you need an epic movie, have big names in the cast or have a very intelligent script.

Sinkie style 'stories from the heartland' movies will not make it. You can smoke the Golden Horse Awards with them, but you can't smoke Hollywood.

What a bunch of bollocks...have you seen The Artist?

No one knew any of them before either.

it seems that the Golden Horse Awards long wanted to give "best picture" to a film outside the Greater China region...a half decent foreign film Ilo Ilo came along...they made it the big winner.

Well Golden Horse also must give face to the Cannes Award.

i bet Mediacorp must have pumped a lot of money into promoting this crap of a movie..............

saw trailer on tv................total crap..............

all these awards are worthless..........just need to have one award given to a movie.............the rest feel they have to award prizes to the movie too, otherwise make the 1st award look bad...........

The film has already exceeded all expectations. No need for an Oscar.Well done Anthony! However at the presentation of the Golden Horse award for this particular category, one particular sinkie woman in the Singapore entourage jumped on the bandwagon so to speak and spoke solely in English; thanking her hubby and son in good measure??? What a letdown and a disgrace! The glory belongs wholly to the director and the cast. Civil servants stepped aside and should forever and gracefully remain in the background. Besides, we do have at least Chinese as a second language. Even the French angmos could manage a "xie xie ni".:D

Our Cheap production can't compete with Hollywood multi million production la,
please realise your dream only in Asia that's good enough!!

Oscar is tooooo high to reach! Be realistic!!

as long as the film do better than teeko jack's is good enough.

It is quite amusing to see the usual folks hyping up Ilo Ilo, a film which has been funded by the MDA.

Many of his short films and his debut feature length film “Ilo Ilo” received funding support from the Singapore Film Commission of MDA.

Please go find out who are the people on the SFC's Advisory Committee.

You either have an agenda promoting the film, or are one of those irrationally patriotic buffoons who squeal with delight when something like this happens.

so I was right lor..................MDA or Mediacorp pumping money to bribe judges to give awards...............

saw the trailer on tv once................I find it crappy..............

Haven't watched Ilo Ilo yet so can't comment. :D

I did watch the Grandmaster though. Was Zhang Yimou its director? I was overwhelmed by the myriad of colours on show. :o

Grandmaster...usual period drama rubbish....sick of zhang yimou.

The real contender was unfortunately not allowed to compete since the release date did not meet entry rules. Watch for it next year.

Blue is the warmest colour.....cinema at its finest.

Grandmaster was directed by Wong Kar Wai not Zhang Yimou. Wong Kar Wai is an acclaimed art house film director who had won many awards. But every moviegoer knows that his films are very draggy and slow moving, hardly entertaining as his focus is on brilliant cinematography. The Grandmaster was no exception and many fell asleep during the show. And if u watched it on dvd, u can never finish watching iit. Grandmaster took more than 10 years to make. The only saving grace in that show was the lead actress Zhang Zhiyi. She played her role extraordinary well resulting in her winning the best actress award at Golden Horse. But as a moive Ilo Ilo is anytime more watchable than Grandmaster.
