WW2 was the end of the era of battleships. They are impressive though, umpteen big guns and small guns pointing out in all directions from the ship. Being in command of such a vessel was indeed a prestigious role. Musashi, Yamato, Bismarck, Tirpitz and all their kind were bloody intimidating, even when they were just idly docked in port.

Although there were battleship versus battleship in The battle of Surigao and also the second Battle of Guadalcanal.

In other theatre where the enemy's ORBAT does not comprise carriers, battle ship versus battle ship was much more common. eg. the battles with Bismark, the battle for casablanca, battle of the denmark straits, etc. these battles involved the german navy which had no carriers.

american historians are still blaming halsey for bringing the entire tf34 (battleship force) with the 3rd fleet to chase after the ijn northern force (mostly carriers) and leaving the straits of bernardino open for the ijn central force (battleships and heavy cruisers) to wreak havoc on taffy 1, 2 and 3 of the 7th fleet at the battle of leyte gulf. halsey could have split tf34 and left 4 slower battleships at the straits while using new jersey and iowa (faster battleships) to provide heavy gun protection for the 3rd fleet. that decision would have resulted in partial tf34 dueling battleship-to-battleship with yamato and remaining battleships of ijn central force. nonetheless, halsey's flagship was the new jersey, and it had to go where halsey wanted to go as he slept and shit in it.

18-inch guns versus 16-inch guns. but americans had surface radar by then and can outrange the japs with radar fire control, which happened at battle of surigao straits earlier between older american battleships (resurrected from pearl harbor) and ijn southern force comprising battleships fuso and yamashiro.

yamato class is the cream of IJN, only 2 ships in its class.

battleship or at least gunnery engagements at WW2 is not as rare as it perviced.

the battle of savo island where USN lost 5 heavy cruisers with no IJN loss.

Battle of the Solomons where USN and IJN surface fleet face off.

Battle of Surigao Strait, USN land bombard force of old battleships face off again IJN old battleships.

Battle of River Plate, Nazi Graf Spee take on 3 RN cruisers by herself.

Battle of Barent Sea, Nazi cruisers attacking allies russian convoy.

Battle of the Denmark Strait where MS Hood sunk by shell fired from Brismarck
