IGP: Beware of copycat robberies by security guards

KUALA LUMPUR: Police are not ruling out the possibility of more cases of rogue security guards.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said that it was possible that the latest case yesterday, where a security guard robbed a jewellery store where he worked at, was a copycat crime.

“It is possible that this security guard got the idea from the security guard from the AmBank robbery. I do not rule out more cases involving security guards who rob their employers,” he said.

Khalid also urged all security companies to check their personnel thoroughly.

“If there is any doubt or red flags, please contact the police and we will help you,” he said.

He also revealed police were paying closer attention to security guards now and random checks were ongoing nationwide.

“My men will be conducting spot checks on all security guards, on their documents, including licence to carry firearms,” he said.

Security Services Association of Malaysia (SSAM) president Datuk Shaheen Mirza Habib said the security firm that hired the guard involved in the jewellery shop heist should be investigated to see if the rogue guard was vetted properly by his employers.

“If it turns out to be a similar case as the AmBank robbery, serious action should be taken,” said Shaheen.
