That was the reaction of The Reform Party (RP) to claims by Ms Han Hui Hui, the activist who is standing as an independent candidate in the Radin Mas single-member constituency (SMC).
The RP’s Kumar Appavoo is also contesting in the three-cornered battle there, along with the People’s Action Party’s Sam Tan.
The RP’s statement was issued on Friday, a day after Ms Han held her first rally on Thursday.
Ms Han, who is being supported by the Socialis Front party, had explained to the crowd why she was running as an independent candidate and for which she has been criticised for creating a three-cornered fight which some believe will benefit the incumbent Mr Tan.
“If you went to the Nomination centre you will realise….for the opposition party that was there, there [were] nearly no assenters for them but at the very last minute someone stood up and become the sixth person and so they manage to come in to Radin Mas GRC (sic),” she said. “If they didn’t come what will happen? There won’t be three corner fight. If I don’t stand for election here what will happen? There won’t be any fight at all Sam Tam will just walkover.”
The RP refuted her claims that the party’s candidate had no assenters, which is required by law.
The party said that in fact Mr Kumar had “an excess number of assentors.”
“In fact Mr Jeyaretnam had been able to introduce Mr Kumar to assenters very early on,” it said in its statement which was posted on its website. “Reform Party has walked the ground In Radin Mas extensively over a period of years and is well known and respected there.”
The RP lambasted “the Socialist Front sponsored candidate” for resorting to “fabricate a story to explain her motivation for breaking the opposition unity agreement and provoking a three cornered fight”.
This, the RP said, “throws her very motivation for standing into question.”
The RP statement, which was signed off by its secretary general, Kenneth Jeyaretnam, said it is “extremely disappointed by Socialist Front’s actions.”
“We have written to the Secretary General of Socialist Front on this issue but he has not yet given us the courtesy of a response.”
The RP said it had been supportive of Ms Han’s past activities, and Mr Jeyaretnam had even introduced her to Mr M Ravi, who later represented Ms Han in a court case.
“However, while her bravery, her age and how much she weighs and her need for funds is not in doubt, it was her creative approach to the truth that was a prominent factor in our decision not to field her,” the RP statement said.
