where is the value add from the 2nd/3rd gen leaders to justify their 10-fold salary increase?

in fact, with all the major public organs like transport, utilities, telecomms etc being privatized, the respective ministries have less and less work to do.

there is a disconnect between responsibility and remuneration.

Actually those who are anti-PAP or anti-government simply need to learn a little about what Singapore was like in the 1950s and 1960s to have a real sense of space, time and effort.

Singapore was poorer than Cambodia, the Philippines, Thailand, Burma and Sri Lanka! It was an island infested with real gangsters, huge unemployment, slums, poverty, school dropouts, malnutrition and diseases among children.

MM Lee used to visit Prince Sihanouk to find out more about the rich kingdom; he also wanted Singapore to be like the Sri Lanka of Southeast Asia - it being a peaceful and prosperous country with tea and many natural resources - like Myanmar.

Of course the Philippines was the richest country in Southeast Asia and the school children learn to sing Filipino traditional songs - just like present-day children who like to eat sushi like rich Japan, or like to ape rich Americans in dressing and slangs.

Young girls of Singapore could easily be the maids of these countries; and the young men could be the "Bangladeshis" of Southeast Asia; or worse - our young women (your mothers and grandmothers) could be the PRC meimeis earning a living in the Geylangs of these countries. Of course the young men became the coolies carrying sacks of rice and onions from the bumboats to the godowns along the Singapore River, or working as office clerks for the angmohs or becoming the chauffeurs or "Ahmads" of the mat sallehs.

Only then will these anti-PAP and anti-Government um chye si fellows open their eyes wide to wonder how the men-in-white are able to create and plant the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow in Singapore that many Southeast Asian governments are still chasing.
