ICA bust smuggling bid

<!-- by line --> <!-- end by line --> ICA officers busted an attempt to smuggle over 3,000 cartons of duty unpaid cigarettes last Thursday. The cigarettes arrived at the Woodlands Checkpoint on March 25 in a Malaysian-registered lorry, and were concealed in three consignments of ladies shoes and pharmaceutical items packed in boxes. Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) officers noticed something amiss when scanned images of the goods turned up anomalies. After more thorough checks, the inspectors found a total of 3,360 cartons of duty-unpaid cigarettes in 56 boxes that were not labelled.

Another 177 boxes contained ladies shoes, as labelled; as was 11 other cartons of pharmaceutical items.
The potential customs duty and GST payable for the contraband cigarettes amount to $236,500 and $21,400 respectively. The seized contrabands and lorry were handed over to the Singapore Customs for investigations. Two drivers, a 31-year-old Malaysian Chinese and a 54-year-old Malaysian Indian, were also arrested.
