A hardcore criminal is just what he is - a criminal who believes in committing crimes to intimidate, assault and spread terror. Soft talk to him is like talking to a deaf mute.

Whack him with the cane and preventive detention, he will wake up to change his ways. Telling him to go home to look after his mother is a big joke of the day. This criminal would be laughing all his way to jail.

If every hardcore criminal is treated like children and able to get light jail term by using cock and bull story, the judges are really out of touch in the real world.

For his multiple offences, a relatively heavy sentence would have been expected.But District Judge John Ng sentenced Zubir Mohamed, 31, to 24 months' jail yesterday."I hope when you finish this round of sentencing, you can come out and take care of your mother... You would be the best person to take care of her, so that's something I want you to bear in mind," the judge said, referring to Zubir's plea for a lighter sentence, saying he was the sole breadwinner for his wheelchair-bound mother.Zubir had earlier pleaded guilty to five charges: one of impersonating a Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) officer, two of voluntarily causing hurt, and two of failing to report for urine testing.
