25 injured after Singapore-bound bus flips over in JB
A long-distance bus ferrying 26 passengers was travelling from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore when it veered off the road and crashed into a ditch in Johor Bahru.
The accident happened this morning at about 4.30am, near the Kulai expressway.
According to the Shin Min Daily News, most of the passengers were sound asleep when it happened.
They were awakened when they felt the bus veering off the road down a small slope, and screamed as the bus careened into the waterway before flipping over.
The scene was a mess after the accident.
Many of the passengers who managed to crawl out of the bus were covered in m&d and blood. Most suffered cuts and bruises.
One woman, who was flung forward from her seat, hit the windscreen of the bus and was seriously injured.
All passengers were taken to a nearby hospital.
Mr Huang Guo Tai, 41, a factory supervisor, was one of those who was injured. The Singapore PR said he and his wife were taking the bus back after visiting family at Tai Ping.
"We were seated at the front of the bus and realised that the bus was going off the road and downslope. We screamed and shouted, but it was too late. After the bus was in the water, I smashed the window and helped to pull my wife out," said Mr Huang.
The couple said this is the first time they have gotten into an accident, in all their 20 years of experience shuttling between their hometown of Tai Ping in Malaysia and Singapore.
But they were thankful that their son did not follow them on this trip.
Bus driver did not help passengers
After the accident, some passengers alleged that the bus driver did not help get passengers out of the bus. Instead, he was busy searching for his belongings amidst the wreckage.
Angered by the scene, some passengers confronted the driver and beat him up. He escaped the crowd before returning to give his statement to the police.
As the bus driver had made more stops than usual during the overnight trip, many passengers suspected that the bus driver was sleepy and had dozed off behind the wheel.
