SINGAPORE — Five Chinese work-permit holders, who were involved in the distribution of contraband cigarettes, were arrested during a raid in Opera Estate last Saturday.

Singapore Customs officers seized a total of 394 cartons and 35 packets of duty-unpaid cigarettes worth more than S$42,300 during the raid, with duty and Goods and Services Tax (GST) evaded in excess of S$33,800, the agency said yesterday.

Following a tip-off, Customs officers arrested Miao Wei, 39, Xu Renfeng, 29, and Wang Guangzhen, 26, at a terrace house at Ernani Street on Saturday. Wang had rented a room in the terrace house and the other two men were delivering the contraband cigarettes to him via a company bus driven by Miao.

Another two tenants — Guo Peiying, 26, and Shi Zhenyuan, 24 — were also arrested. The two men had a total of 53 cartons and 18 packets of duty-unpaid cigarettes in their rooms, Singapore Customs said in its statement.

The officers also raided another terrace house at Aida Street, where Xu was renting a room, and recovered 60 cartons and five packets of contraband cigarettes.

Investigations established that Wang ordered the contraband cigarettes from Xu, who then recruited Miao to deliver them. Wang had wanted to sell the cigarettes at a profit.

Guo was sentenced to four months in jail, while Shi was fined S$5,800 for their involvement in contraband cigarette activities. Court proceedings for the other three men are ongoing.

The typical Sinkie measure dignity according to the amount of pocket money he gets:
"If the annual salary of the Minister of Information, Communication and Arts is only $500,000, it may pose some problems when he discuss policies with media CEOs who earn millions of dollars because they need not listen to the minister's ideas and proposals. Hence, a reasonable payout will help to maintain a bit of dignity."

In these smuggling cases you will notice that there is always no report of how the cigarettes were brought into Singapore.

Because they are in debt. You are never considered rich if you are still paying off loans

From my years as a property agent, I noticed Those multi-millionaires sporean-chinese are very PRO-PRCs. Hence it is not surprising they rent their landed property to PRCs tenants.

That's why we always see whenever got reports of very wealthy sporean-chinese donating money to overseas charities in overseas countries, they always mainly donate to China.

Example, a few years ago got 1 sporean-chinese tycoon donated a whopping SGD $35 million to Fudan University in China and 1 sporean-chinese eye doctor donated huge amount of expensive hospital equipment from his own pocket to Xiamen of Fujian Province.

In comparison, the very wealthy sporean-chinese very rarely donate millions of dollars to Philippines people, or other poor countries's people in the neighbouring Southeastasia region.

I've came across many cases of multi-millionaires sporean-chinese they rent many of their condo units and private properties to PRCs tenants/students/families at below market prices.

I even got 1 PRC client he had continously rented a Queenstown unit from a multi-milllionare sporean-chinese landlord for a lengthy 9 years already and he still don't want to move out becos he got a very good bargain below-market-rate-price for his rental. I often advise that landlord to increase his rental price but that landlord always reply no need to increase the rental price.
