How can it be free?

Ubuntu is brilliant.
It's no wonder our users ask how all this can be free. The answer is simple.

1. It's open source.
Everybody's doing it – from IBM to Google, Firefox to Wikipedia – some of today's best software is based on open-source technologies. Shared code, shared efforts, shared principles. No cost.

* What is open source?

2. It's managed and funded by Canonical.
Canonical is the number-one Ubuntu services provider. Companies can choose to receive expert training, support or consultancy for a fee that goes towards the continued development of Ubuntu.

<hr>

I am a user and I know how good it is. It never will give me fucked up with virus nor spyware, never need to find drivers nor applications. Everything just work automatically. I only do my work and never had to worry about my computer, it will never waste my time. I enjoy it.

MS if far lacking behind, further by each day.

Nice. Coolest Ubuntu.

1. Wish there is "Cancel" button in some dialogues. What if I want to cancel the action? Cannot cancel?

2. Cannot find SignOut or Shutdown button (can't remember which one) in version 10. Ubuntu said later it is a bug because they forgot to add the SignOut or Shutdown button to 'Start' menu or something like that.

3. Wubi edition buggy. I installed Ubunti wubi edition and after some time, I cannot boot Ubuntu because of missing component, then I go Control Panel to uninstall Ubuntu, but Windows said Ubuntu already uninstalled. I used 3GB of space for Ubuntu wubi, now I lost 3 GB of space because I cannot uninstall Ubuntu wubi. :(

Ubuntu installed by Wubi is by itself not damaged, however some windows installations or maintenance utility can cause it unable to start, e.g. deleted off the boot.ini at c:\

Wubi does not re-partition your HDD like a standard multi-boot installation. It create a file in your case 3GB to be mounted as Linux disk. It is a 3GB file within your NTFS or FAT32 partition, your file manager will be able to find it and delete it, if you like to.

Reinstall with Wubi should work.

To abort some dialogs without cancel button, hit the X on top right of dialog box to close them.

There are shut-down buttons on the menu bar that can get accidentally deleted by users, and you can add them back.

Where does Ubuntu Wubi stores the 3GB file in File Manager? Which folder? I want to go to file manager to delete this 3GB file to reclaim the 3GB.

Thanks for clarifications on other points.

Ok. I found it.

C:\users\public\ubuntu

Delete this folder and got my 30GB (not 3GB) back.

I guess wubi don't work well in this sense. Need to try the partition option where I partition the hard drive, one partition for windows and one partition for ubuntu. But I hope windows don't mess up the ubuntu installation like how it did for wubi.

Wubi's method isn't a real Linux installation, it is good for only experiment and temporary tests while keeping MS as main OS. This subject the Ubuntu installation to become vulnerable to damages caused by many of MS's ow weakness and crisis. A multi-boot installation is recommended and it will really shift the partitions of your HDD and make a space for itself. To do that you have to boot either via Ubuntu CD/DVD or USB thumb-drive to install, and that is easy and that is usually what I do.

However I appreciate the Wubi as it brought some possibilities, to test use without always depending on slow CD/DVD/USB, that Wubi installed in HDD, giving proper speed performance for the evaluation. It can be thus uninstalled.

The multi-boot installation leaves it partition space if uninstalled, it can be easily reused by any Linux, however for MS, you need 3rd party tools to merge the partition space back into your original drive areas. MS itself can only allow you to format the space as a new drive.
