[h=1]New scheme to provide Hougang elderly with free hearing aids[/h]

By Felicia Choo
The hearing of 17 needy elderly residents was given a boost on Thursday, during the launch of Project Communication.A collaboration between Hougang Citizens' Consultative Committee and Sunlove Home, it seeks to provide the elderly in Hougang with free hearing aids. Each hearing aid costs around $200 and the cost is sponsored by Sunlove Home.Recipient Mr Yeo Kim Chai, 77, gave the initiative the thumbs-up. The former odd-job labourer said, 'My hearing has improved greatly and I feel more comfortable.' Like some of the recipients there, he cited cost as a deterrent to seeing a doctor for his hearing-impairment.The project will benefit low-income elderly residents from Hougang, with no cap put on the number who will receive hearing aids so far. Hougang grassroots adviser Desmond Choo stressed that there are no set guidelines for which residents are considered 'needy'. Assisted by a doctor from Sunlove Home, he had helped to put the hearing aids on for the recipients.
