A super-strain of bird flu that could infect and wipe out millions has been developed in a laboratory.

Dutch scientists who created the ‘Armageddon virus’ say it is ‘probably one of the most dangerous viruses you can make’.

Their research focused on what it took to convert bird flu – which can kill more than half of those infected but does not spread easily – into a highly contagious virus.

They said this knowledge would be vital for the development of vaccines and drugs to prevent a possible pandemic.

But others argue the virus should never have been created – and warn the potential if it escaped from the lab is ‘staggering’. There are also fears the recipe will be seized on by terrorists looking for a biological weapon.

The U.S. government is so concerned that its advisers are trying to block the details of the virus’s manufacture from being published.

National Science Advisory Board for Biosecurity chairman Paul Kiem, an anthrax expert, said: ‘I can’t think of another pathogenic organism that is as scary as this one. I don’t think anthrax is scary at all compared to this.’

However, others pointed out that similar fears – raised six years ago when another team of scientists recreated the Spanish flu virus that killed up to 50million in 1918 – proved groundless.

The latest controversy surrounds the H5N1 bird flu virus. In 2005, there were warnings of a potential bird flu global pandemic which would kill hundreds of millions.

Of the 573 people that have caught the bug so far worldwide, 336 have died. However, the germ’s inability to spread easily from person to person means the predicted pandemic has never materialised.

Now, scientists at the Erasmus Medical Centre in Rotterdam have created a H5N1 bird flu that spreads as easily as winter flu.

In experiments on ferrets – whose flu symptoms are most like humans’ – just five mutations in two key genes turned the ‘normal’ bird flu into a highly contagious, super-spreader.

The scientist behind the project, Ron Fouchier, said: ‘We now know which mutations to watch for in the case of an outbreak and we can stop the outbreak before it is too late.’

A university spokesman said: ‘If this type of research is carried out under maximum safety conditions, the benefits are greater than the risks.’

But Donald Henderson, an expert in biosecurity who spearheaded the worldwide drive to eradicate smallpox, told New Scientist magazine if a highly contagious virus with a 50 per cent kill rate got loose, ‘a catastrophe would result’.

Last night, the journal Science said the U.S. government’s request to publish only an abbreviated version of Dr Fouchier’s work was being taken very seriously.

The earth needs this virus, with human population exceeding 7 billions our living space is getting smaller, street everywhere gets more crowded than before and food productivity did not grow with the pace of population expansion. Our population is due for a big correction and thus this deadly virus came in handy.

One of these MAD SCIENTISTS is better than 10 Bin Laden or 10K MSK. The bastard let this out of his test tube and that's it for all. Marry X'mas Ho Ho Ho!

The vaccines should be released onto the Earth for population control but before that, the vaccine should be sold to the millionaires of the world and also peasants who will signed their lives to slavery to the service of the millionaires! That would be the perfect society for millionaires like myself :)

For your case hor...

Virus work perfectly and then the vaccines just like your PAP's MRT - cock up! :p:D

So Bye Bye Liao!

rich people where got go to USELESS forums like this one ?

this is good news. yes, more virulent the better. wipe off all these humanoids, all these fartups and all these human monsters and evil demons. the world is getting insane and it's time to quit mother earth and all dieded...

what you talking about? You already have bird flu. I saw you trying to shit on top of people's cars and windscreens.

CB! Once the test tube gets broken we have no place to hide. Must stay in a space suit forever.

Had no doubt all along that these bastards in the labs made all these lethal craps to be pains in our ass. KNN!:oIo:

If it isn't created artificially, it's simply a matter of time before natural mutation does the job.

It's therefore better to create this deadly strain ahead of time and start learning how to deal with it while it's still in a test tube.

Ever since the day man stole fire from heavens we are trying to play god and fuck with god's tricks without full knowledge of consequences etc. So we had fucked ourselves many times and there will be the last time quite soon and after which there is no man left to do these silly things any more. :D:eek::rolleyes:

Too late to put a lid on killer flu recipe?

TAGS: Health, Thrills&Spills, Terrorism, Biology

Potential bioterrorists may be able to unleash the worst pandemic humanity has ever faced once a recipe for creating man-made flu is published, despite a decision by scientists to omit crucial pieces of their original research.

Academia, which relies on the free flow of information to thrive, agreed to the self-censorship only grudgingly. The scientists say all the data needs to be published in order to better monitor new strains of influenza and create a vaccine, if such a dangerous virus ever occurred naturally.

The scientists are unlikely to be able to stop people with dedication and knowledge from recreating their work, some experts warn. Ron Fouchier of Erasmus Medical Center in Rotterdam who headed one of the two teams that created the killer flu, said the scientific data has already been shared with hundreds of researchers and governments in open scientific meetings.

“The exact mutations that made this transformation possible were not particularly novel or unexpected, so anyone with a reasonable knowledge of influenza virology could probably guess at them if they so wished,” said Wendy Barclay, professor of influenza virology at Imperial College London, as cited by The Independent newspaper.

Professor John Oxford, a flu expert at Queen Mary College, University of London, agreed: “The study by Fouchier is a huge service to all of us because it reminds us of how wafer thin the barrier is between a benign H5N1 virus and one that could spread easily. The 120 WHO flu labs around the world can use the DNA sequence information to identify and stop the spread of any new H5N1 variants.”

The man-made strain of the deadly H5N1 bird flu, which can be transmitted through coughing and sneezing, made the headlines in late November. If released, it has the potential to cause an unprecedented pandemic with could kill hundreds of millions of people.

The virus was made in the lab through relatively low-level manipulations, which has alarmed security experts. It is feared that terrorist groups could replicate the process to get their hands on a powerful biological weapon. To address their concerns, the scientists behind the research have agreed to withhold part of their work from publishers.

A virus with the potential to kill up to half the world’s population has been made in a lab. Now academics and bioterrorism experts are arguing over whether to publish the recipe, and whether the research should have been done in the first place.

*The virus is an H5N1 bird flu strain which was genetically altered to become much more contagious. It was created by Ron Fouchier of the Erasmus Medical Centre in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, who first presented his work to the public at an influenza conference in Malta in September.

Fouchier said the strain circulates in animals, particularly birds, but rarely affects humans.
In the ten or so years since bird flu first emerged in Asia, fewer than 600 cases have been reported in humans. But the H5N1 strain is particularly vicious, killing roughly half of patients diagnosed with it. What stops it from becoming a major threat to public health is that it does not readily transmit from human to human. Or at least it didn’t – until now.

Researchers in Fouchier’s team used ferrets – test animals which closely mimic the human response to influenza – and transmitted H5N1 from one to another to make it more adaptable to new hosts. After 10 generations, the virus had mutated to become airborne, which means ferrets became ill from merely being near other diseased animals.

A genetic study showed that the new, dangerous strain had only five mutations compared to the original one, and all of them were earlier seen in the natural environment – just not all at once. Fouchier’s strain is as contagious as the human seasonal flu, which kills tens of thousands of people each year, but is likely to cause many more fatalities if released.

"I can't think of another pathogenic organism that is as scary as this one," Paul Keim, a microbial geneticist who has worked on anthrax for many years, told Science Insider. "I don't think anthrax is scary at all compared to this."

Now Keim, who chairs the US National Science Advisory Board for Biosecurity (NSABB), and other members of the body, have a very difficult decision to make. Fouchier wants his study to be published. So does virologist Yoshihiro Kawaoka, who led similar research in collaboration with the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and the University of Tokyo, and reached comparable results. And it is up to NSABB to give them the green light.

Many academics and biosecurity experts are naturally cautious about releasing information which could provide any bioterrorist with a ready recipe to hold the world to ransom. Some argue that such work should never have been done in the first place and call for international monitoring of potentially harmful research.

"It's just a bad idea for scientists to turn a lethal virus into a lethal and highly contagious virus. And it's a second bad idea for them to publish how they did it so others can copy it," believes Dr. Thomas Inglesby, a bioterrorism expert and director of the Center for Biosecurity of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

However the very same data, if made available to the scientific community, could potentially allow humanity to prepare for an H5N1 pandemic, which Fouchier’s study has shown to be far more probable than was previously believed. Clamping down on freedom of information in the scientific domain may in the end leave us defenseless against the flu, should it arise naturally.

NSABB plans to issue a public statement soon, says Keim, and is likely to issue additional recommendations about this type of research. "We'll have a lot to say," he says.

The H5N1 virus

A man-made virus that could wipe out half humanity has been deemed a terrorist threat. And while the scientists behind the Frankenstein-flu hoped their research would help find a cure, critics fear they have developed the ultimate bio-weapon.

When virologist Ron Fouchier and his team of scientists first "mutated the hell out of” the H5N1 bird flu virus and presented their findings this past September, fear spread like contagion across the Internet.

But it is not just panic-prone bloggers who are up in arms about the latest virus.

Microbiologist and US National Science Advisory Board (NSABB) chair Paul Keim did not mince his words when describing the potentially deadly bug.

"I can't think of another pathogenic organism that is as scary as this one," Keim told the Science Insider Journal. "I don't think anthrax is scary at all compared to this."

Despite the widespread panic, the Dutch team who engineered the deadly strain at the Erasmus Medical Center in Rotterdam still hope to publish their findings in the American Journal of Science.

However, sensing the imminent threat of making the results of their investigation public, the NSABB reviewed the paper to determine whether it should ever see the light of day.

One senior scientific advisor to the US Government also expressed his grave concerns.

“The fear is that if you create something this deadly and it goes into a global pandemic, the mortality and cost to the world could be massive. The worst-case scenario here is worse than anything you can imagine,” the Daily Mail cites.

With the US government calling on the researchers not to publish the details in scientific journals, The National Institutes of Health, which funded the research, said Tuesday that while researchers are making changes, it's important for the overall findings to be published, the Associated Press reports.

Fouchier for his part, while admitting one could not manufacture a more lethal virus, also remains adamant that his research should be published to empower the scientific community to react appropriately.

While the H5N1 bird flu strain was so vicious it killed over half of all people infected with it, humanity’s saving grace was that it did not readily pass between people.

However, the one aspect of the disease that protected the world from an all-out pandemic went out the window when researchers altered the H5N1 bird flu strain so that it could be transmitted through the air.
*Bio-weapon blueprint

*Many critics say the decision to practically weaponize an already deadly virus borders on the criminal.

Andrew Bosworth, the author of Biotech Empire, says publication of the research would be in direct contravention of the Biological Weapons Convention of 1972.

Writing to the Chair of the US National Science Advisory Board for Biosecurity (NSABB), Bosworth argued if an ordinary citizen had concocted this virus “in a garage,” he “would be subject to a 15-year prison sentence.”

He went on to say it is ludicrous to claim that publishing details of the virus would enable scientists to find a cure.

“This argument assumes that the most recent H5N1 strain is a threat to human populations, and it is not (unless we make it so). The strain in question never existed in nature; instead, it mutated across 10 generations in a laboratory setting, among a population of ferrets,” Multipolarfuture reports.

Bosworth further asserted that “publishing details of this manufactured virus would green-light the concoction of ever-more deadly pathogens for fame and profit.”

The new strain has five mutations as compared to the original, which had one. While all five individual strains were naturally occurring, they were never found in a single microorganism.

Although pathogens naturally evolve, their evolution rarely moves along such a concertedly deadly path. The new virus is just as contagious as the flu – which kills tens of thousands of people each year – but would be vastly more deadly if released.

The man-made killer bug is currently being stored in a basement somewhere at the Rotterdam medical university, though without the benefit of armed guards.

It would now appear the heated debate over whether or not to publish the research regarding the world’s most potentially potent super-flu is a Catch-22. By creating the virus, the only way to prevent a potential outbreak on a previously unknown scale is to increase the risk that it might occur.
