Horticulture In Our Pigeon Holes

Hi all,

Im thinking of growing some edible plants/herbs like tomatos, chili padis and basil inside my flat has been doing some research on the internet. I like the idea of hydroponics and found that the setting up cost is not expensive ($50 for a full HOBBY kit) and is less troublesome than soil planting. I have even seen melons being grown using hydroponics. The only problem I might have is the lack of sunlight as my windows are north south facing and do not get much sunlight.

Are there any brothers here who have similar hobbies? Please do share your experience.

Lack of sunlight can be easily resolve with internal lighting but that is going to add to the electricity bills.

The lightings are not cheap. Cheapest starts from $280, most costs $400-$600 while the higher range ones could go into thousands. I was wondering how much in electricity bill do I have to pay if I were to add in one of the LED lights.

bro, you really zeng cai or growing weed on the sly??

if you wanna add lighting, can consider those solar powered kind.

solar charges the cell that powers the light, setup cost not that ex and you save on electricity bill.

LOL. When i was pondering about starting this thread on the mrt this morning, I knew someone would ask this question. I expected the person to be drifter but it turned out to be you. I dont smoke even ciggies. Even though Im only 31, I was lucky to be able to live in a real kampong for 6 years of my life. Therefore, the kampong mentality still runs in me. I am also someone who loves nature.

There are lots of things to grow. I used to think that tomatos are easy until I tried them using soil and the result was really bad. They need alot of sun.

anyway, my old man grows some chili on soil at his pigeon hole, but i do think that this hydrophonics thing is pretty cool. but i suspect you'll probably need a big space to grow something substential.

Thanks brother. Yeah, you need a big space to grow big projects. They actually have big kits that costs about $600-700. I saw the size and its good for those with gardens. For a pigeon like me and a novice plus 1st timer, I'll be happy if my hobby kit can have a little harvest of basil or tomatoes.

Herbs seemd to be the easiest to grow. Flowers attracts lots of butterflies which would mean worms...

I have a lot of interest in this but have to admit I am more of the traditional soil farming guy. Homegrown tomatoes or vegetables are different from commercial ones as the latter uses a lot of addictive. I am also thinking of experimenting with hydroponics once I have the time and land to do it.

I think plants are sensitive to the type of lighting they need. So LED light might not be appropriate Should check on this

Go to Sim Lim and buy what you need and DIY the LED yourself. It will be very cheap.

Hi brother,

I started off playing with soil but found out that it is really troublesome and you need alot of knowledge on the different type of soils for different plants. Hydroponics make it easier and cleaner. Unless I retire at Vietnam 20 years later, I dont think I would ever have a piece of land in Singapore to do any soil planting.

There is alot of satisfcation seeing the plant bloom and the fruits ripening. Nothing beats tasting the fruits of your hard work. There is a more complicated process call aeroponics. I saw a restaurant in Changi City Point doing this. It looks lovely. But again, needs lots of light. Seems that lighting is a big problem here. Have to ask my PRC chick to bring a few of those LED lights for me when she goes back this month.

Seems that indoor planting is a really lucrative business for many people. Im sure there are a couple of brothers here who plant that scared plant in Singapore.
