SINGAPORE : An accident between a double-decker bus Service Number 87 and a large tree-pruning vehicle left a 50-year-old male passenger dead and several others injured on Friday.

The collision occurred along Chai Chee Street in Bedok.

Police have arrested a 33-year-old Bangladeshi foreign worker from the landscape management company for causing death by negligence.

Shattered glass windows, a fallen tree, and major traffic congestion were the result of the accident which left one dead and eight passengers - including a pregnant woman - injured.

The bus was behind the lorry when it went to the middle lane. But little did the bus driver know that the head of the crane was protruding into the middle lane, and this scraped against the side of the bus.

The loud sound from the collision attracted hundreds of residents from nearby blocks.

One resident said: "Like glass shattering. It sounded massive and sharp."

A second commented: "I saw them moving the victims down from the upper deck. It looked quite serious."

Three bus passengers were taken to hospitals, while others refused treatment, citing minor injuries.

Both the bus driver and crane operator were not injured in the accident.

They remained calm and silent while clean-up work was going on. - CNA/ms

NParks caught off guard when it cums to managing their subcons? Those $$$million scholar directors just outsource their duties away, shake legs and expecting that nothing will happen. Fuelled by the record growth the government is forecasting for the economy this year, more than 100,000 foreigners are set to enter Singapore’s workforce, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong told The Straits Times.

PM Lee said the move was unavoidable as the labour market here is bursting at its seams.

“If we don’t allow the foreign workers in, you are going to have overheating,” he said. However, he assured Singaporeans that the government is managing the number, saying the calibration of foreign workers will moderate the inflow.

Mr Lee added, “Even with that, I imagine there will be more than 100,000 extra foreign workers this year. I cannot see it otherwise. But we have to accept that.”

Leong Wai Ho, an economist with Barclays Capital Investment Bank, does not think the inflow is excessive. “The addition of 100,000 probably reflects more discriminate and careful use of foreign workers, not that the levies have gone up,” he said.

Mr Teo Siong Seng, ... “A more controlled inflow of foreign workers will benefit the country,” he said.

Manpower Minister Gan Kim Yong also stressed the importance of a productivity-driven economy for sustainable growth in the next ten years. “In the short term, we would need to tap on more foreign workers to support economic growth… while maintaining the longer-term goal of reducing over-reliance on foreign workers through investments in productivity,” Mr Gan explained.

While many Singaporeans workers are concerned about the inflow, Labour MP Josephine Teo feels that companies facing a shortage of workers may find the increase in foreign workers “a welcome relief”.

I think i posted somewhere earlier in this forum or the earlier delphi one where i related my experience with the Nparks contractors and their arrogance.

Either they are overly lazy or they don't bother to turn on their warning or hazard lights when parked on even the right side of the expressway. Many times i see them doing that and well, they think they are above the law, catching folks just resting in a park, now even the contractors think they are that too.

Please all chant " caught off guard, caught off guard"....taking buses are dangrous these days....have to wear helmet, armour & seat belts, not to mention gas mask..

Somehow now a days I don't trust the Singapore transport anymore with their lapse of security and safety. They ( Delgro and SMRT ) keep reporting profits and and how highly paid their top management are have they consider putting some of that profit in making the transport system a bit more secure and safe. I sincerly hope we do not end up with terror attacks like in UK and Spain or accidents like in India and China :(
