Taipei, Nov. 4 (CNA) Taiwan repatriated Tuesday the two young women from Hong Kong who sparked a media frenzy early this year for trashing rented rooms, using false identities and leaving incendiary graffiti including the sentence: "Taiwan is China."
The duo, a 20-year-old surnamed Tsang and a 19-year-old surnamed Yao, were sent back to Hong Kong after completing jail sentences for a number of violations including the theft of a television from a room in Taipei. They had been arrested in March at a low-cost hotel in the southern city of Tainan.
After trials at both the Tainan District Court and the Taipei District Court in May, each was sentenced to five months for theft, embezzlement and forgery. Tsang was also handed a combined penal detention -- a sentence for lighter crimes -- of 120 days, while Yao was handed a detention of 130 days.
Although the two were allowed to commute their sentences to fines, Tsang decided to join Yao in jail despite being able to pay the sum, according to the Yilan Immigration Detention Center. They began their terms in Yilan Prison on June 17 before being transferred to the immigrant holding center in mid-October.
Under Taiwanese law, the Hongkongers will not be allowed to enter Taiwan within five years following their repatriation. The National Immigration Agency has the authority to relax the ban based on individual circumstances.
