Hong Kong offers relief to mainland drought, flood victims

Xinhua, August 23, 2013

The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR)government has decided on Friday to fund two agencies to help victims of drought and flooding on the Chinese mainland.

A HKSAR government spokesman said two grants from the Disaster Relief Fund totaling 5.48 million HK dollars (706,549 U.S. dollars) have been approved to support two relief agencies to undertake relief projects for the victims.

According to the spokesman, 1.39 million HK dollars will go to Oxfam Hong Kong for drought victims in Yunnan Province while another 4.09 million HK dollars will be given to the Amity Foundation for flood victims in Sichuan Province and the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, respectively.

"To ensure that the money will be used for the designated purposes, the two relief agencies should submit evaluation reports and audited accounts on the use of the grants after the relief projects have been completed," the spokesman said.
